HDMI output to a TV.. *too* sharp?

Hi all,

having issues with my mac mini and HDMI output. Let me set the scene by saying I have the TV connected to 3 sources (sky hd, 1080p upscaling dvd player, and the mac mini, in 1920x1080 over vga) and it looks great on all settings. The TV is a Sony KDL40W3000.

The VGA output from the mac has some slight diagonal "banding" effect. Looks like a slight brightness distortion in diagonal lines - it's not unwatchable, but thought I'd change to HDMI to get the best picture possible.

However, running over HDMI made the picture almost TOO sharp - round the edge of text, for instance, is a bit of a "halo" effect. It looks like it's been pushed through a photoshop sharpen filter.

Anyone have any ideas? I have the same settings for all HDMI channels, and the other inputs look fine. Could it be the cable or DVI to HDMI converter, or is there a setting on the Mac I should tweak to make the HDMI output look right?

Thanks in advance :)

i use a mac mini on dvi to hdmi and have no problem whilst in bed i use 1360x768 for intenet browsing because text is to small across the room but usually i use 1920x1200 i dont get/see the halo effect your talking about i use a pano viera 1080p

i doubt its cable as i use cheapo unless you have a cracked/damaged one, plenty of people will also vouch posh = expensive is no better unless over 50 metre runs or 20k's worth of equipment hanging on end.

If it's a decent TV then each input will be adjustable.

It's likely that the HDMI input has the sharpness setting turned on, or is too high. Personally I turn it off.

I'll check the settings by plugging the Mac into different HDMI inputs and see if the problem is the setting on HDMI input 3.
