Has anyone got any recommendations for a head unit with the above? I am currently looking at a JVC kd-R711 but wouldn't mind something abit less garish :D

Not looking to spend too much and willing to go second hand :)

Cheers

I have that exact HU, dunno how you think it's garish (it has a dimmer to turn down the brightness)

Streaming from a W995 right over bluetooth, handfree is fine too.

It's got "for ipod" plastered all over the box too so i'm guessing the hardware is setup to stream over the cable.

Don't know if the iphone would run AD2P due to it's crippled bluetooth.

Ah, good to know about the dimmer that makes a massive difference.

Im sure i have read it will do AD2P with iphone and pull playlists etc, i will try dig it up :)

I have a Sony BT2900 and it performs this function just fine.

My only criticism is that it doesn't have a play button meaning that if I'm using Spotify I have to manually start a track when I first get in the car (not a problem with Samsung's Android music app though), although this might be an issue with all headunits, or even A2DP/AVRCP. I'd certainly have a play with some in Halfords - connect your phone up and disconnect/connect etc. and check which ones work in a way that suits you.

I'll give mine a try in a bit, need to put some music on it first though!

Excellent, than ks for that matey i really appreciate it :)

I can imagine that being a pain, i wonder how it is with the iphone ipod app?

I think I have that exact HU in the MX-5 but I can answer generically:

It can't be done afaik - Apple only implemented a small part of the spec meaning the music works but the control doesn't. Spotify uses the same part of the API as the iPod app does and neither work with the HU controls.

Using a cable, the HU can skip tracks back and forward in the mode where it simply pulls the .aac files directly off the ipod but in "ipod mode" it cannot control the playback at all.

I know it's not much use right now but iOS5 will improve the A2DP support to send track names and allow control from the car.

ios 4 already lets you do track skip remotely over bluetooth, works great on my steering wheel controls. ios 3 didn't though.

Oh right - when I tried it recently with a Skoda Fabia vRS it'd play but the back/forward controls didn't work. I guess it was the car then!

Ahh, only checked if it would play over bt, didn't check the track selection, etc. Worked for the basics though.

What is AD2P? I have a cable going from the rear of the unit to my glovebox and can control everything using my Alpine unit, I would recome that setup a while back, but now would want something that could take calls hands free as well via the cable if possible

A2DP is the means to stream music over Bluetooth.

AVRCP is the means to add extra functionality to A2DP over bluetooth (ie. controls, track names etc.)

AFAIK, Track names, track skipping etc. works just fine with iOS 4, however track names will not work with Spotify.

Similarly, Android doesn't have native support for track names either, although some music players (such as Motorola's and Samsung's) have their own bluetooth stacks that do support it. Pause, Skip track etc. works fine in Android however.

If I didn't want Handsfree functionality, and if Spotify wasn't so damned handy I'd probably go for a dedicated iPod in the glovebox.

Why dedicated, why not just use your phone, takes 10 seconds to take out of your pocket and most brilliantly, it charges on every journey you take.

Press 6 on the head unit... Play/pause function

It doesn't work like that, at least not in Spotify. With an inline remote, the dedicated play button does the job perfectly.

Nope, all of my phones have always been able to last the day out. In fact, my latest (SGS2) has managed two days quite often.
