Heat Pumps: anyone have one/thought about it?

Fitting rads is easy I've done plenty but the starting quote has to be reasonable, no way is £13k going down to £3-4k.
Did they estimate your heat loss would be enough to require a 12kW unit? Also why is it 10 days installation / labour?

I can’t decide whether to use ours now. Air con heat pumps, but with a 6.7p a unit cost from 12 until 7am, I’m wondering whether it would be cheaper to use them than our gas fuelled underfloor heating. I guess the difference is that the underfloor heating keeps giving off heat most of the day, despite it being off.

I don't know why 10 days it's just an initial estimate they have not done a full survey. They reckon heat loss would be 11.4kw. That seems high, probably need them to do a full heat loss survey to be sure. Last year I used 12200kWh of gas but then the heating isn't on 24/7 so hard to compare.

Yeah, definitely that's supposed to be one of the main selling points of Heat Geek certified people is that they do a heat loss survey. Did they go around mapping the size of your rooms?

The guy who did mine said hallways are considered. That's the only window I have facing me.
He may well have been mistaken or it’s an octopus policy rather than working within the full flexibility of the rules. I’d expect octopus to be more risk averse because of how they operate.

I’ve not seen any reason to doubt Adam Chapman in this case, if the video was materially wrong the comment section would be a dumpster fire (I’ve not checked mind) and I doubt it would be live anymore.

Nah they do that after you pay them £395. They just took a few details like house size, windows, also told them my house is plumbed in 10mm copper.

I just did a quick quote on Heat Geeks, £5,550.
Savings of £280 a year. So 19 years to break even. No thanks and that's if the first heat pump lasts that long.
Have they not figured out a way for these to work without a cylinder yet, I don't really have space for one.
All my radiators are as big as I could fit so I don't think I'd need any changing.

How long does a gas boiler take to break even?
Compared to what, my current Ideal Vogue is 8 years old now, about £1300 at today's price.

Is Heat Geeks the way to go, are they reliable. If my boiler packs in I'd definitely consider one, it would be nice to completely ditch gas.

They look good at first glance. Handy that they do solar too as I'm looking at getting that done as well, so would be great if I could get one company to do all the work.

Have you had any work done by them personally, or have just seen them recommended?
they did my install, excellent job.

google suggest innovations on the horizon that would reduce retrofit install costs (that had to be a lne of attack),
my gas boiler/tank are on the opposite(near front) side of the house that makes hp rework with a (rear) evaporator expensive,
earlier detailed quote in the thread had itemized that expensive rework

Project summary

The Nusku project aim is to create an innovative heat pump solution which is designed specifically for easy replacement of gas boilers in a cost-effective way, without the need for major internal home rework which most existing heat pump solutions require.

The unique approach encompasses all the required heat pump functionality into a sleek, outdoor unit as an all-in-one replacement for a gas boiler, ideal for the distress purchase market.

The project will move the solution from TRL5 through to TRL7/8, furthering the technology to a pre-production level solution which will be tested in the Salford Energy House to provide an independent assessment of performance.

Just be mindful the thing that they binned me off on was the size of the unit being too loud for neighbors..so wherever the pad is, give yourself plenty. I was 4m away and it still failed.

I really can't see an issue there, 27 meters to the nearest line of site neighbor, 20 meters through the garage to the one behind us, and 16 meters through the house to the other.

It's never really been about saving money, the main savings are emission related and the bonus is less money going out of the economy to Norway and the USA.

You can get lucky like mine where the install after the grant was less than replacing my existing gas system with an up to date system but I am probably in the minority.

That said, if you are using time of use tariffs and/or have solar and batteries, you'll save a lot more than £230/year. My entire energy bill including fuelling my car for 10,000 miles last year was £100.

That was nearly 8000kwh electricity actually consumed and 4800kwh of gas from the first 3.5 months before that got ripped out. I'm not your typical example but its well within the art of the possible.

Just had my Octopus assessment on my home for a heat pump and looks like all good to go. My home has little heat loss (approx 3600khw) so now to wait for the installation date. No additional costs outside of the £8000 quote so around £500 after the BUS voucher scheme.
