Heat Pumps: anyone have one/thought about it?

Well, it’ll be cheaper if there’s already a heat pump installed so you’re not having to make any changes to pipework or radiators, just replacing the heat pump or cylinder.

I think a lot of people are thinking a boiler costs £2k - £3k to replace but not factoring in property changes initially for a heat pump.
my boiler install was £1100 including the boiler......

I just did a quick combi boiler quote on BOXT and its closer to the Octopus heat pump quote, £4200 vs £4600.

That was with a removal of system boiler and tank and move boiler upstairs to airing cupboard. At that price the heat pump becomes more viable I guess, but for like for like replacements Welshman is right, it doesn't add up.

New builds should 100% be heat pump anyhow. Building regs have tightened on insulation (albeit more stringent for a self build vs volume builder, make sense of that if you can!). If we mandated solar for all new houses, and even a battery, you have an initial outlay wrapped into the building cost, but with a much lower (almost negligible) annual running cost. Large quantities of batteries acting as buffer stores would then better support wind and other non solar renewables during winter.

All too logical though!

Still see new builds with a couple of solar panels on a big roof just to box tick. Its actually infuriating.

Yeah, I see plenty around Bristol which are 3 beds with 6 panels so I assume 2kw installs. Huge wasted opportunity. By the time you are on the roof already it would be another £1k to increase it to 4kw, which would be fine for most 3 beds!

Same thing that happens when a boiler breaks I assume, repair or replace. Lets face it though most people cant afford these prices, cant see uptake getting to the numbers the govt wants.

It's not the same. The cost is going to be different. You can get a boiler replaced for 2K or thereabouts. Won't be that much for a HP.

The government need to get the cost down further. Had they come and said to me say 3-4K I would have been a lot more enthusiastic.

Edit: Did not think one could replace it by themselves. Most wouldn't anyway.

You could probably get it down to that price via a heat geek if you upgraded all your rads yourself.

It’s not that difficult of a job, just time consuming, hence high labour charges.

Exactly what I will do, I'll even install the concrete base and soak away for the heat pump.

PS I installed the entire heating system almost 20 years ago, about the only thing I didn't do was connect the gas, which a family friend did, and yes he was Corgi registered.

Just be mindful the thing that they binned me off on was the size of the unit being too loud for neighbors..so wherever the pad is, give yourself plenty. I was 4m away and it still failed.

Maybe another installer would have applied more common sense (I face the non habitable parts of my neighbors house).

The noise assessment is based on the sound pressure to the nearest habitable window of the closest room (bedroom or lounge) of your neighbour.

Fitting rads is easy I've done plenty but the starting quote has to be reasonable, no way is £13k going down to £3-4k.

perhaps I got a bit excited but it could enable you to get a heat geek level install from an entry level supplier like Eon who fit also Vailent.
Yeah, eon are not installing in my area it says but they have some rough guides, they reckon about £6500 for 4 bed detached which is what I have. I guess the low Octopus quotes people get have just given a warped view of the market.
