Heavy CPU usage when accessing SATA drive

^^WHOA! Must be hell in there :D ^^

Because UDMA/PIO are transfer modes for hard drives in general, not just IDE ones. Also IDE talk comes in because certain mobos/drivers/configurations mean that SATA ports show up as IDE controllers even though they aren't. It just keeps things simple.{snip}
:confused: I've had 2 mobos with SATA HD's, one A7N8X-E (nForce) & current one A8V Deluxe (VIA) & none have ever listed the disks in 'IDE Channels' - just optical drive/s & an old IDE driver I connect once in awhile for backup purposes ever appear there. Current mobo has 'VIA RAID Controller' listed under 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' & the 2 SATA disk under 'Disk drives' (Device Manager). But in the Properties no options to really change much/anything :) Hence, why I'm asking for mobo details just to clarify - & 'replacing' the drive hasn't really solved the problem :(

Either Speedfan isnt set up correctly, or you have some serious problems there. All of your hardrives are way too hot, it also looks like your cpu and chipset are getting too hot. Also, why are fan1 and 2 not spinning? And finally those voltages look off. The + ones don't look too bad, but the - ones are miles off. hp7909 might be right about the psu not being up to the job.

Edit. hp7909, this is how it appears on my MSI K8N Diamond;

the others are running hot too, but that could be a knock on effect of that 1 drive over heating, as they do sit pretty close together, I will try now and see what happens with just 2 drives going

Do you have ANY case cooling :eek:

Even before I put in a front case fan - my HDD temps never got THAT high - and I had 4 running at the same time as well!!!

Get those temps below 50C or you could well be waving goodbye to a few drives in the near future!!

What sort of case do you have?

Not familiar with nForce 4 therefore did not know you can change Transfer Modes. Cheers for clarifying/sharing that :o Though, my confusion/doubt about SATA HD's appearing on IDE Channel/s still stands & the OP's still not forthcoming on clarifying that (/mobo specs) :(

ok powered off for 30 mins, spaced the drives better and turned on a couple of spare fans.

The temp is a lot lower but the drive is still reading as screwed under SMART.

maybe the over heating killed it and now there is no going back! its only a 150gig drive so a replacement could be worth it just for peace of mind

those temps are much nicer! :)

if it had been running for a while at that temp then it could well have been damaged.

what does SMART report for your other drives?

hopefully none of them will have had their life cut short too ;)

yep the rest of the drives are fine, just this one, which is my oldest SATA too, probably 3 years old now, and it makes some funny noises sometimes!
