********** Hell!!

Just exaggerating for effect ;). The government loves blowing money on inquiries which tell us something we already knew.

I know a bare minimum about fracking, but it seems like one of those things where one day we find out the water has been poisoned by an oil company due to "human error" and then billions in fines are handed out.

I also predicted that there would be no WMDs found in Iraq and the invasion was for an ulterior motive, and that we would not win the war in Afghanistan and simply retreat after wasting billions on it.

Can't predict the lotto numbers though :(

us led forces have had around 3300 kia and 25000+ wounded , afghan troops have 10000+ kia.

go back to the soviets and its 9000 kia and 50000+ wounded

the difference? in the 80`s the numbers of Mujahideen were thought to be over 200,000;

this time its believed that the Taliban have under 30,000 at its height....

afghanistan will allways be a meat grinder

Just build it *aswell*, as part of a bigger mix of energy sources.

There are some people who actually believe that harnessing tidal power slows down the Earth's rotation!

green welly brigade and all the `nimbys` are stopping bigger projects.... oil and gas are finite but when its becalmed and at night wind and solar dont work well :( nuclear helps the base load but sadly you need something for the surges...

anyway fixing the grid would quite substantially reduce the need for new power stations.... hot damn the transmission loss!

I'm not really surprised at this given that experts think the amount of shale gas under Scotland's Central Belt could stretch gas resources from having 120 years left to having 250 years left.

Apparantly George Osbourne is wooing all in an attempt to sell off as many drilling sites as possible. To be completely honest, stripping Scotland's resources isn't exactly going to help the Unionist cause in the independence referendum given that they think once things get up and running, gas output could bring in as much cash as oil. I make that 60 billion per annum.

I understand that done properly it is pretty safe but lets be honest, when have humans been known for not making errors.

Can AndyT or someone who understands all this explain how we can be sure that it is safe. You are pumping very dangerous chemicals and large amounts of water into the ground to fracture rock to release the gas trapped there. How can you be 100% sure that none of those chemicals will leak into the wrong places.

"According to a parliamentary answer, the fluids used to date by Cuadrilla comprise: fresh water and sand—99.96% and polyacrylamide friction reducers—0.04%. Other potential additives include hydrochloric acid, typically at a concentration of 0.125%, or biocide at a concentration of 0.005% if required to purify the local water supply."

Hydraulic fracking is not a new process and the "very dangerous chemicals" used are commonly found in lots of every day products and can even be bought over the counter in some cases. Plus they are used at such diluted concentrations that they pose little or no harm to the environment.

Cheers Salse, I was reading something a year or so ago about the fracking in America and it seemed to suggest that some of the chemicals used were definitely in concentrations high enough to cause problems. I guess that you can use what you like within the countries guidelines.

There's absolutley nothing unsafe or damaging about fracking, provided it is done in line with the relevant guidlines. Pretty much like every other industry in the world that has ever existed.

I would welcome the occasional 2-richter "earthquake" (negligible minor tremor, of which there around 1million globally per year) as a quite exciting addition to our fairly mundane environment.

Less carbon output than oil and coal. Probably less carbon output than the manufacture, transport, installation and maintenance of pointless wind turbines. Relatively speaking not that bad for the environment. Cheaper, cleaner automotive LNG may be well placed to replace petroleum-based fuels in the future.

Bring it on I say, if it's economically viable of course.

Very well put :)

*eh?

I do not work directly for an Energy company, though I do work for a consultancy company that carries out projects in the Oil and Gas, Nuclear, tidal and wind energy industries. We also have a very strong, responsible Carbon policy.

I work in the energy part of the business, specifically nuclear, though have worked on wind turbine projects and off-shore O&G projects.

I would consider myself reasonably well informed in these types of things. What are your credentials?

BEng Mechanical Engineering graduate in June. The petroleum engineering module was garbage though. I'm pretty well informed.

Be careful with your job induced self justification, it's seeping into your judgement, much like the chemicals into our environment.

The infinite payback period wasn't a reference to cash money, rather environment that we all have to live in. But I'm sure house wont come close so you're totally fine - don't worry!! Yes I vote Labour, name one positive thing the Tory government have achieved since being in power? Just one. Oh, and just because the forums blue, doesn't mean everyone's a Tory ;)
