********** Hell!!

Nuclear always gets a bad rep but it's the only way we're going to cleanly meet the needs of the planet until fusion is upon us

That's down to the fact that crusty environMENTAList brigade still think that nuclear power utilises the same technology as it did in the 60s and 70s.

To be honest, Britain was one of the world leaders in this era for nuclear technology. Shame the AGR was rather mismanaged during its development - building a reactor whilst developing it doesn't really help. :p

Why do we always go for the cheapest option that is short term? It's what really annoys me about UK infrastructure. We never take long term decisions on anything and then when other countries have we just moan about saying that's what we should have done.

Yep we really need more gas power stations.

You know, I'm beginning to form an outline of a SyFy channel disaster movie script in my head. Would be set in Las Vegas though, not Blackpool.

BEng Mechanical Engineering graduate in June. The petroleum engineering module was garbage though. I'm pretty well informed.

Be careful with your job induced self justification, it's seeping into your judgement, much like the chemicals into our environment.

The infinite payback period wasn't a reference to cash money, rather environment that we all have to live in. But I'm sure house wont come close so you're totally fine - don't worry!! Yes I vote Labour, name one positive thing the Tory government have achieved since being in power? Just one. Oh, and just because the forums blue, doesn't mean everyone's a Tory ;)

1. By simply being in power, it means Labour aren't in the driving seat. Success.

2. They have managed a frankly shocking economic and social Labour legacy with relatively little pain despite the political ramblings of a lisping, dribbling fool who is willing to have a dig at any possible opportunity. Who, I probably need to point out, seemingly has no effective counter-policies of his own.

3. 1 and 2 are enough for the time being. Repairing utter, utter destruction takes time and I only hope the British public can see past their own self pity to realise that we all have to suffer to get ourselves back on our feet and give the Tories another 5 years to help get us back to where we should be.

Thank you for your concern, but it's not "job induced self justification". It's careful, considered, informed, pragmatic thinking. I'm open to debate on the energy issue as it is the single most important challenge human beings face at the moment; however so far you have offered nothing to the discussion other than a knee-jerk reaction seemingly founded on misinformation.

I'd invite you to read up more carefully on the fracking chemicals issue, and on the isolated, and arguably unrelated methane-gas-in-tap-water situation which you've raised concerns about.

As a degree educated engineer I'm sure you will consider all the facts before deciding that you can't be moved from your current viewpoint.

Fracking, as an energy source has the potential to be an excellent addition to the energy mix. It really isn't dangerous. If you want to discuss the dangers of energy, it's worth noting that many people have already died during installation, and maintenance of hallowed, supposedly God-Like wind turbines, which is a very dangerous process. This is only likely to increase as deep-ocean offshore wind farms become more common.

If it lowers my bills I'm all for it. As long as they follow the guidelines then it's all good. Though I still think the UK should go nuclear - I don't understand why not. Wind power isn't efficient enough, and we haven't harvested tidal power.
