Hellingly Lunatic Asylum

gotta say, there's no way i'd go in there on my own

shots 1 & 7 are awesome in my opinion... not loving 3 as much as most people though to be honest there's something a bit cheesy about it?

what lenses did you use for these shots?

Mostly my Sigma 17-70mm and Sigma 10-20mm I believe.

Wow nice, tempted to go but it would be take over an hour and a half for me to get there-any idea if there are any buildings like this near Portsmouth way?

How quiet is this place? From the looks of it and the graffiti etc I would expect it to be quite popular with kids messing about, vandals, drug addicts etc etc? Nowadays most places places like this are fully boarded up I would thought, I am quite amazed that you can just walk in and that it hasn't been burnt down?

Certainly looks like a very intriguing place!

If its anything like any of the other abandoned asylums around the currently, it'll be quite heavily guarded.

really dislike the phrase "lunatic asylum" :(

not everybody sectioned under the mental health act is a "lunatic"

Yeah, half my family including my girlfriend work in a secure unit and have done all my life. Met some very different people and these big old buildings are very creepy when they're occupied, never mind abandoned.

Loving the photos, great work :)

you are sort of right... but the actual definition of "lunatic" is simply someone not of sound mind... so the phrase "lunatic asylum" is perfectly accurate its just used these days as more of an extreme phrase which makes it sound worse than it is.

I would be interest to know this if the OP could answer?

When I went for these shots I didn't see anyone.

Last time I went I saw about 3 groups of other people exploring. The place is huge though so there could have been more.

Places like this always attract scrubs. The last place similar to this that I went had fire damage, loads of needles/tin foil junk and we bumped into other explorers too. The majority of sites like this (specifically asylums/hospitals) have security too.

Great stuff, makes me want to summon up the balls to go breaking into derelicts :D

Don't break in - That leaves you open to arrest. Just go through the holes that the scrubs have already made! If you're in the manchester area, I've got a trip planned on Thursday... ;) Mail in trust :p
