Don't know why, but this part of the forum caught my eye again after quite some time. Used to do some SETI a few years back but stopped for electricity and overheating reasons.

I feel inspired to come back now though, with the free electricity and watercooling. Few questions though...

What's the general consensus on running multiple projects these days? Ie. I used to run SETI and another one, climate prediction I think. Idea being if one didn't have any WUs the other one probably would. Best just to run one? Don't know.

We still using BOINC? Had a quick read of the FAQ sticky but don't know how much of it still applies. What are people using these days?

Any recommendations for projects?

Google probably is my friend... but I'd rather trust the forum :D

Climate Prediction has changed a lot since you were here last - the projects are now even larger and aren't really suitable to be run as a backup as most likely you wouldn't complete the WU before the deadline.

SETI has also changed a fair bit as their WUs are now larger than before and I think their servers are now a lot more reliable than they used to be (partly due to a lot of people getting fed up with the way things were being run and leaving) so the need to run two seperate projects has probably been eliminated anyway.

Most of the active people here now seem to prefer folding though there are still plenty of others doing SETI and many other of the Boinc projects, they're just not as vocal about it :p

Oh and welcome back

Well, I think it's working. FahMon is reporting the progress to be at 0% now for about 10 minutes. But it has downloaded work. And CPU usage is hovering at 50%.

If its dual core you need a 2nd client as explained in the sticky. Give us a shout if you need any help.

Welcome to the fold. :) Nice to have you with us.

I guess you have either a dual core, hyperthreaded or dual processor system?

Its normal for folding to stay on 0% for a while as the units can take a while to complete (2 days for some on my system in spec).

If you have a system with more than one processor install folding again in a seperate directory then it can use both CPU's :D make sure you give it a different computer ID in the advanced options during the setup however.

Check it after 2/3 hours and it should have made progress.

Welcome to the team

It's normal for FahMon to take a while before you get any real data such as an ETA for finishing or a benchmark result - F@H WUs can be pretty large so it's quite normal for it to sit there looking like it's doing nothing between frames (1% of the WU)

Have you got a dual-core CPU or is it just the HT making it look like 50% usage? You can run a 2nd console to use 100% of your CPU if you like

edit: jeez 3rd to reply - I'm losing it :p

Yes it's a dual core. I'm slightly wary of running two copies for temperature reasons I guess. Maybe I'll try it out though.

At the moment, FahMon messages is saying:

Client has an unknown state (Unable to find a complete frame)

That sounds like something that shouldn't happen

EDIT: Log just said it's completed 1250 of 125000 steps, so it must be doing something. I'll leave it alone for a while.

EDIT 2: 1% now, with an ETA. All working then. :D

Ok. New question. Thought I may as well try running 2 copies of it when I noticed this in the guide...

Put another copy of the console in a *different* directory. Otherwise they’ll interfere with each other. I like to put one in C:\Fold1 and another in C:\Fold2. You do the same things as with a single client; same with the shortcut, same with the registry edits. It's just that you have to do each twice. Using the -local flag in this instance is especially important.

Where is the -local flag going exactly?

We've been told by the bigwigs on the main folding forums that the -local flag isn't needed when the client is run as a service.

Try it without and as long as you set the machine ID of the second client to "2" you should be fine :)

Good call, I'll go edit that. I thought i've gotten rid of -local stuff. :o

EDIT: While I'm at it I suppose I should at some point flush out QMD references. I don't think that the QMD work units are coming back. :(

Very nice guide by the way Billy. Helped a lot :)

Another question. I seem to have it running on both cores now but I notice according to FahMon that both clients are running the same project number. Are they meant to be different?

There are thousands of projects. Each project represents a particular protein or situation under study. Of each project there are thousands of WUs available. A WU is distinguished by four numbers; the project, run, clone, and genaration numbers. I'm currently running:
[12:51:24] Project: 1495 (Run 0, Clone 76, Gen 42)

I have a couple of other machines that are running WUs rom project 1495 but they are not running an identical WU becasue the numbers here are different. In short, you're fine. :)

You might find that your CPU doesn't get much hotter running two instances than one - that's what I discovered with my Core Duo. Might be worth a try!

Oh, and welcome to the team... here's to a long and happy foldy career.. you'll never leave :D

Aye. Sounded at first like they were eager to get them back, and that it was just gonna be a month or so! I dunno if they've got too caught up in all the GPU/SMP/PS3 stuff...

With reference to QMDs...

We've done the basic analysis and I know what we need to do next, but our quantum expert (Young Min) has graduated and moved on and we haven't hired another one yet, so this is waiting for that next step. With all that's going on (ATI GPU, SMP, PS3, v6, and some more that we have yet to disclose), the QMD has been pretty low on our priorities at the moment.

So don't write them off just yet - may be some time though :o
