I've never played any MMOs before. I was thinking of trying one, something free to play.

I've added Rift, Star Trek Online, Lord of the Rings Online, D&D Online, Planetside 2 and Dota 2 to my Steam account.

Any recommendation? :)

Rift & LoTRo both excellent games, even if LoTRo is a bit long in the tooth now.
Rift has about the best F2P setup of any of the MMO's out there now.

Rift, TERA followed by LOTRO out of the free ones.

If you decide its a genre you like there are other ones you buy the box but no sub such as The Secret World and Guild Wars 2 that are good.

I load up Rift earlier coincidentally, and I was quite impressed with the graphics. It pushes my 670s quite hard.

How about SWTOR?

Rift's pretty good (One of the better MMO's)
I've heard decent things about Defiance.

SWTOR, I like it, but it's not for everyone, and it's lacking a lot (At least it was on launch when I was playing it)

Sound like I should definitely give Rift a go.

Has WoW had its day (at least for new players)? I know that needs a subscription so I wouldn't start with it anyway.

Star Trek Online is THE worst game ever made, even if they offered to pay you to play it you wouldn't want too.

Lotro - Rift - Aion - Tera are probably the best ones out there however Lotro really has died a death last year or so.

SWToR has a very bad free to play model, however as a newcomer the story driven content would defo keep you locked into it.

Warcraft still the best but the others are passable - Rift especially I enjoyed the first month or so.

Look for a game called WoW, short for Whipped, Owned and Wrapped. All you need is a woman. If you don't have a woman in your life World of Warcraft could be for you.

Star Wars you could play for the stories if nothing else. The f2p model on it is terrible as others have mentioned but it will be enough to see if you like it.

Star Trek, not the greatest game ever made but worth having a go, the f2p model is fairly forgiving on that if you just want to play for a while.

If you enjoy shooters then Planetside 2 is well worth trying and is my main game at the moment, but keep in mind the game is much better if you aren't playing solo so joining a clan eventually (outfit) is advised. It isn't perfect by any means but there isn't anything else like it.

Is Star Trek Online that bad? I don't hear many people mention it.

I've been downloading Lord of the Rings Online this evening, it's been going for hours with updates and my connection is 120mbit.

mmos are very lonely without friends so try to make some fast.

I'd say wow or at least look into it and see if they have launched any new fresh start servers recently or if they are planning to

Rift is a decent game, but after 2 years out from WoW it just made me realise that there is no substitute for WoW and re-subbed >_<

Yeah WoW is good because it has the community there, I met some cool people when I used to play. You can go in without a single friend though and just meet cool people. It's like the Facebook of MMO, has the biggest base but not the best MMO. If you're just getting into MMO go to the classic first and try the free WoW trial.

Rift was a good game pre-expansion but Trion seem to have lost any sense of direction and the game is in a serious decline in terms of quality content. Lotro should just be avoided fullstop, joke developer at this stage.

STO I don't know, but from what I understand they are growing in terms of their playbase right now so must be doing something right, dunno if they've fixed their ****** engine though. DOTA2 isn't an MMO. Planetside 2 is a bit of a marmite game but certainly worth trying out although it isn't a real MMO. My vote would probably go to EQ2 despite it's issues, the most engaging MMO I can think of that's F2P right now.

IMO though the MMO industry is really on it's knees right now and in desperate need of some decent competition, there is a lot of dross out there.

I feel obliged to point out you can do this in ANY mmo.
