Help can't boot

fail. ffs...

running my old 920 now, tried to boot using F13k. didn't work. i've reflashed to F12, which i know for SURE worked fine. still fails!

all signs pointing to a faulty SSD... how though? everything was working just fine until I swapped out the CPU...

help! :/

This is painful. F12 bios doesn't enable USB keyboards to work, so I can't even do anything once windows repair starts to load.... looks like I'm gonna have to go back to F13j or k (probably k) and try again. at least i'll be in a position to accept the 970 when (if...) i get it to work.

this is just ***** painful.

I think I've narrowed it down to the C300 SSD drive... I can't flash it to upgrade its firmware, as the drive isn't detected. Crucial tell me that this looks like the drive is dead somehow, which is crap news but on the upside it means I can now try to get things working on a good old fashioned mechanical HDD instead.

now trying to install windows on a regular HDD.

Time for a RMA then.

At least your up and running again, i take it this is with the new cpu.

It most definitely is :) 6 cores ahoy :D

Back to slow old mechanical HDD but who cares. as long as it works right?

Didn't buy the C300 from ocuk (1st mistake...) but I've already spoken with Crucial who should be able to deal with it, since it's still under warranty. I'd rather have a refund than a repair or replacement tbh - sick of SSDs now. Bad experiences...

Can't help it. The performance is amazing but their reliability is seriously questionable... TRIM issues, speed degradation, firmware updates requiring full format, dodgy problems with SATA600 and various SATA controllers... it's just all too early for this tech it seems.

i'm gonna stick with mechanical HDDs until SSDs are simply plug and play like mech HDDs are and have been for years. hopefully won't be long. maybe a year or so.

btw just for info, this new 970 is utterly ridiculous... renders that were taking 38 mins on my 920 now take 15 on my 970. the 920 used to hit 85C under load, this 970 hits 55 under load... amazing! totally blown away.

Same as myself as they are still too expensive in terms of storage capacity. It will be interesting to see what comes of this Memristor technology Hp have developed. Probably cost even more than SSD's do mind :D Im changing to a F4 when OcUK start selling them this month. Best bet in the meantime me thinks.

totally with you mate.

just started RMA process with Crucial. I hope they replace it with one with the latest firmware on it! will save me some hassle! That said, I'm a bit loathe to be installing even a brand new one again if it's gonna give me this grief again!

Will probably just sell the damned thing... :)

I have soo much stuff on my HDD and so many things configured that it would break my heart to do a clean install which is the only way when you introduce a SSD into your machine unless your SSD has the same capacity as the old HDD (unlikely). The C300 you bought is one of the best going at the moment so I keep wondering have they really figured out the SSD tech yet??

I was really thinking about buying a 64GB ssd soon but this thread and others have really made me have second thoughts.

Is it really worth the bother to have an ssd for my OS?

Yes and no. The speed boost is incredible but it comes at a cost. Still very expensive in terms of storage capacity. I wouldn't stop you from getting a SSD however.

It really all depends on the individual, and how they use there comp, i got an ssd as i don't leave my computer on all the time, so the faster boot up time certainly helps me, it generally feels much snappier to use day to day.

Some people have had bad luck, like the original poster, this can happen with anything technical, not just SSD's, but i can see how it would put people off though.

Its really all about weighing up the pro's and con's for your set up really. I was able to use a small SSD (intel 40gb) as i knew my OS install and all my app's only came to a max of 25gb, some peoples are double/triple that. For storage and games i use a quite and fast samsung F3 drive.
