Ive had major problems all weekend trying to upgrade my pc,im really at my nerves end :(

on friday i received from ocuk

Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Installed them all into my case and then tried to install winxp onto the new HDD and this is where ive had the head ache, basicly windows will start its initial install but when it says it needs to reboot its does reboot but then starts the exact same part of the install again.it does it over and over unless u turn off the pc,ive tried differnt xp discs, different disc drives, ive even tried the hdd on another pc and the same thing happens

so i stuck my old SATA (not sata2) drive back in and winxp installed fine with he new mobo ram and cpu :(

so im thinking that either ive got some mobo bios settings wrong coz ive never used a sata2 hdd before or ive been sent a duff hdd by ocuk :(
is there a way to force the sata2 hdd to act as a sata1 drive ? so i could try it that way ?

the wierd thing its that the bios sees the hdd and windows sees it BUT partition magic says it cant format it or partition it

please help before i top myself :(

When it reboots after the initial bit where it copys files over go into the BIOS and set it to boot from HDD instead of the CD, as it sounds like its booting off the CD every time.

thanks for the tip i just tried it but no joy it just keeps restarting its self

I set 1st boot as dvd it will go to the first "set up is configuring you computer" or what ever , then it asks me to press F6 if i need to install 3rd party sata/raid drivers , ive tried installing and not installing them then the big yellow bar comes on and it installs a few more bits and bobs, then it says remove any diskettes while the pc reboots , i remove them then it reboots , then it basicly starts this whoole cycle again

as i said i put my old drive back in last night following the same procedure and it was fine

i think i need to RMA it but im wondering why it shows up in the bios and in win xp if its borked ?

I have the same hdd as you. I had this problem when installing linux (Ubuntu) it just wouldn't see it as a hdd. I assumed it was because it was sata II and the kernal hadn't been updated.

Win XP Pro installed fine.

Try changing your hdd to boot first via bios =)

I fixed it guys , i ended up installing win xp on to my old hdd then copying the boot drive over to the new hdd
