Got to Maxtors website, download the Test Utility (Seatools) and run it. It sounds like there is a problem with the disk itself, and at least the utility will confirm or deny that. Without knowing it's difficult to suggest the next move...

You need to enterthe BIOS and select your optic drive as the primary boot device. Failing that, pressing F8 during boot should give you a list of devices to boot from.

Make sure the XP install disk is inserted. The process will start copying files like a new install. When complete, select Install. After which it will detect an existing OS and will ask if you want a fresh install or repair. Select Repair.
