Because I though some people would like a little background info..:)

A small amount of background info is fine, but the post was too long for most people to bother reading in full imo. :p

Just look at the first few replies.

I just think that when people make their posts too long, then a lot of people end up actually reading less.

I read it and thought it was quite interesting to see how the company and the store has changed, also saw it before the edit :p

It seems to be part of your problem is your new boss, and part of it is the new structure (no OT). Either way you can't change either so you either bear it or move on to another company.

I see what your saying but if people were genuinly interested they would take on board what I have to say on the matter.. I dont mind long posts The more info the better the return I would think.

The retail company I work for is also making a lot of changes staff aren't happy about. (DIY company - HB).
We had a complete restructure of store management which has annoyed a lot of now ex-managers.
We are being pressured into getting customers to sign up to our 'gold' card. Which is essentially a store credit card. I think its disgusting that we are being forced into getting customers to sign up to them.
We are also pressured into getting customers to sign up for our 'replacement cover' which is extended warranty for certain products.

95% of the customers don't want this stuff, and we get blamed for this!

Bottom line is retail sucks.

I know. I read it all and found it quite interesting to see how you felt things had changed :). It sounds very like a lot of companies, where a few key changes can seriously hit staff moralle. I was just pointing out that it was quite a long read ;)

I feel for you.. You have to get customers to have a card and we have to make customers spend and extra 50p to reach our targets.. The ammount of time you spend trying to sell something the customer doesnt want loses you sales. You could spend that time selling stuff to a customer that wants things.

My mum (worked for Safeway for aaaages then Morrisons when it switched over) has been warning me for a while about this.

She is a couple of posts above you and is currently entertaining being headhunted...

I didnt really read it all just skimmed.

Working for a supermarket is always going to mean your working for someone who is only interested in image and profits.

If i were you Id book a day off and chill out. Whilst you work for Morrisons try looking elsewhere.

We all have bad days/weeks/months at work but to be honest most jobs are crap.

Forgot to add in my OP. I have been off for a week with my missus. Been chilling out best part of it. It is only today that I have thought about it all. Im not back till Wednesday, joys of being manager is doing the rotas..:D

I really should have been looking for other jobs.

What does she do if you dont mind my asking?

I met my missus at M. She worked in personal and since got a new job with double the money. Currently being headhunted too iirc.

She works on the admin and training side of things.

She's been doing 60+ hours a week since I was a kid so its not just Morrisons.

Most of the trainers etc at M do those hours. I do 50+ most weeks. Although I have got it down to 45 recently.

You realise that if my average hours over 6 months totals more than 46 I can get a warning or even worse.. .

So what do I/we do? leave the dept in a crap state and go home or stay to make sure it ok. Fully staffed it easy but when you start at 6am and you wake up wondering if you will finish ontime or have to stay till 8 or even 10pm because of a member of staff would call in sick who is on late night... That makes me sick.. Physicaly.

Yes we can give them warnings etc. Eventualy showing them the door. the thing is they wont recruit to replace.

A good example is this. On the bucthery a lad called in sick on the Thursday and was due to work Fri and Sat too. He was going to Ibiza that weekend on a Sat night flight. 2 weeks later he got back and came in for one day. called in sick on the Tues and didnt turn up for 2 weeks. No-one knew what happened. The butchery manager heard he wasnt coming back. They wasnt going to replace him. The manager got intouch with the lad and asked him to come back (long story about why he didnt turn up etc) the SGM agreed because it would save thme from haveing to get moaned at because they wasnt going to replce. They would rather put up with a unreliable member of staff then get some one new in.

I myself am a dirty student working part time in good old teski's. Must say all of what you are saying is VERY familiar. Been there nearly four years now, long enough to see plenty of higher staff come and go and you see the DIRE impact some can have on the store.

It really makes me wonder how these people got in managerial positions with absolutely NO IDEA about what they're doing and effective strategies for increasing sales/morale. Absolutely ridiculous in my view but as a part timer and student i can afford to sit back and laugh at the idiots. Everything i have seen shows that those on the floor actually have the greatest ability when it comes to doing things well.

Anyway mate i hope you get sorted however the situation ends up and good luck

Thanks for that. At least im not the only one. You are right in saying the staf that do the work have the ability. They know more than the "senior" managers etc. I would love to get moaned at by the SGM and tell him to run the dept on the guidlines we are given.. He would FAIL.

In a lot of respects DG you are your own worse enemy.

I work in many different multinationals as a consultant and one of the recurring themes is poor delivery being saved by staff.

Although its not primarily retail based it often involves dealing with the mess that IT deliver. The problem facing the company and the staff that have to deal with crap systems is that the staff themselves are very adept at manual workarounds.

This is the problem with diligence in staff - it gets abused by middle management.

The exec think everything is going fine as thats what middle management tell them.

middle management are laughing as they know there staff will work themselves silly to ensure no disruption to the customers and thus the profit - what the exec are into.

Ultimately as long as you and your staff will prevent customers from complaining you will get ridden by the middle managers. They are seemingly delivering a high quality service for little money. In other words you are lot are working 110% all the time and thus staff numbers (aka cost) is kept low.

Bit of a bitch aint it ;)

Tell me something I didnt know..:p

You are so true. Thats the thing. No one does anything about. it. We had a meeting 3 weeks ago before the SGM went on holiday and he asked us to tell him how the meetings go and what things are like on the shop floor. Only a few managers spoke up. Everyone else was scared.. He then asked for any sort of ideas or even C&C on his meetings an wanted us to come to him on the Saturday (following day) with these C&C.

I tried to get hold of him before I went home. He broke up that day. I wont see him till Wednesday now. Maybe Thursday, depends what his days off are. I have lots to discuss with him about his last meeting. I will probably mention a lot of thing I have posted in here tbh.
