Help! I killed a PC

The cpu fan spins when plugged into 2 out of 3 connectors, in one configuration it does not. The case fan does a quick whiz then stops when plugged into any of the connectors.

In some cases a CPU fan that spins momentarily then stops is normal. Unless you're sure that the CPU fan used to spin 100% of the time before you... ahem... 'serviced' her PC?

The motherboard does some basic checks on everything plugged into it at startup. If the PC speaker is connected (properly), then anything fault (such as CPU, graphics, memory) will be indicated by a combination of beeps.

You +have+ to connect the PC speaker the correct way or it won't work, same as an LED light. They only work one way.

If you're sure that speaker is connected correctly, take the RAM (memory) out and see if the motherboard beeps at you (it should). You'll also have to be sure that you've connected the 20/24 pin and 4/8 pin power cables to the motherboard.

All I know is that it goes "whoosh" and thats it. The cpu fan will keep spinning. The Case fan wont. And it does not boot. It does not bleep. I have not touched the case speaker so I can' imagine that it is broken. Indeed I have not got a clue as to where it is!

What is most frustrating to me is that there are many here who within 5 minuets could diagnose the problem. I aspire to be that good with computers. I dont like that I have fialed to find or fix a problem. I will have a damn good fiddle with it tomorrow. But with a replacement motherboard being £23.99 I woder if it I should admit defeat and just replace th whole motherboard.

Take a picture of the pc with the side panel off and the mobo showing. They do say that a picture speaks a thousand words ;).

The PC speaker cable what everyone has been referring to; may have been knocked out off the pins it jumpers on the mainboard. If it has, you won't hear any beeps at all.

This is very easily done, I almost always knock these cables off when I replace an optical or hard drive.

This is why I said you need to download the motherboards manual in PDF from the manufacturer. The manual will show you exactly how to connect the PC speaker cable.

The speaker cable is located coming from the CASE and sits on these very small pins. The manual is vital to show you where these pins are and which ones to connect.

Once you get the manual you'll be able to see immediately if this cable has been knocked out or loosened.

From what your saying, i.e CPU fan spins then stops, no beeps and no life I'm guessing this is a PSU problem. Buy a PSU tester ASAP, this is an invaluable tool for the system builder no more than £20.

If you haven't connected the CPU fan correctly, you won't get any life either as most mainboards won't boot with it disconnected to protect the CPU from damage.

I can not find the motherboard manual online :(

I had a similar issue recently, while cleaning dust and crap out of my 2nd PC. It didn't beep on booting, just a big rush of sound of the fans going at full pelt - turns out that I had knocked a board of ram slightly out of the slot, so wasn't seated properly. Worth checking?

Same thing happened to me when I was putting a dial up modem in my mum and dad's computer. Knocked the ram, turned it back on and it just continuously beeped with a black screen.

It was just the ram not seated in properly.

Where are you based OP? I'm sure some ocuk White knight will help out a member in need

Why were you puting a dial up modem in you parants pc? Surely they would not live long enough for a web page to load vai that route.
