Help installing heatsink

Sorry to create a new thread but I figured it would get me an answer quicker than leaving a post in my other thread.

I've got a AMD Phenom II 955 and have installed that on the new mobo. I'm about to stick the heatsink on but it's something I've never done before and I really don't want to **** it up. I've spent an hour watching youtube vid's with various methods of application of thermal compound (I've got some MX-3) and am happy with that part.

The part I'm concerned about is that the heatsink seems to have some sort of thermal compound already applied - the stock stuff I presume. Do I need to remove this or is it okay to go on top of the MX-3 that I'm about to apply to the CPU?

you can wipe it of with some bog roll or something clean, then just apply a pea sized blob to the top of the cpu.

then either spread the blob around using a plastic card, or stick your finger into the corner of a food bag.

or just leave the blob as it is, fit the heatsink and give it a wiggle to spread the goop about.

Wipe off the stock stuff. Both surfaces have to be clean before applying the MX-3 & you should only apply the recommended amount.

What I can also add is that, installing the heatsink might require more force than you will be comfortable to apply. But make sure everything is lined up properly, no obstruction, etc & you should be good.

Just done now. Thanks very much.

Now to crack on with the rest of the build, fingers crossed in a couple of hours I'll have the guts of a much more capable PC working.

Hey, I wouldn't worry too much about applying your new cooler, just make sure you clear the old crap off first.

If you put too little or too much paste on, the worst you'll get is slightly raised temps. Normal stock cooler temps for this CPU tend to reach 60-65c under load, so as long as yours runs at or below that temp, you should be fine. If you're getting higher temps, just make sure the paste covers all of the CPU's surface, and is not thick... Don't hesitate to wipe clean and start again if you're worried.

I've just installed SpeedFan and it shows the following:

temps.jpg

Should I be worried? That's when doing not much (downloading some stuff from steam, but nothing intensive.) I have seen temp 2 go up to 50oC.

The little fire icon means its getting warm ;)

Do you know which part "Temp3" is referring to? 80c is extremely warm for a CPU that supposedly idle other than a few downloads. I suppose its possible Temp3 may be a motherboard temperature? unlikely to be that hot though..

That coretemp pic looks fine. must have been speedfan playing up.

Don't worry about it :')

You could check how warm it gets under load, with something like prime95. It will tell you if your heatsink is on properly!

Looking at that not really for a stock hs. Run an intensive game for a bit or stress it using one of the many stress test programmes and keep an eye on the temps.

My 965 with the stock hs was quite warm on idle/load. Also some tim's take a while to 'cure' and reach their optimum, not sure about the one you used. So over the next week or two you may see a slight drop in temps?

Whats airflow in the case like?

Airflow isn't great, I didn't have any cable ties so I need to do a bit of cable management later. I'll be buying a side fan as well at some point.

So long as it should be alright left alone whilst I download a few games then I'm happy.
