Hi all, me and my room mates have a problem with maths, and we have sat all day trying to solve it, if anyone can shed some light on how to do this, please please do so!!!!

The question we are stuck on is 4, D):

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/656/pdftf7.jpg

Also could anyone help us confirm, we have 3 different answers for 4, A) 0.5, 0.71 and 1.66, which is right? Thanks!

For a) i got y=0.14x + 1.58 ...

You have given 3 different numbers, how are they equations of lines?

Unless i am being a complete idiot, since it is late :D

for 4 a) i get
y = 0.43X + 0.714
(my graphical calculator confirms that a line with this equation passes through the points: (3,2) and (10,5) )

edit: part b) = 2.81 (distance between centres = 7.81)

part c) is obviously 0 (or 5 if you measure from the centre points)

Equation that needs to be solved for part D i think is:

0.0625X^2 + 0.0625Y^2 - 1.43X - Y + 5.726 (=0)

i have no idea how to solve that and get coordinates tho :|

lol, i'm an idiot. I used (10,3) as the second point not (10,5)

Im going to try do my own coursework now instead of yours :p

isnt it....

you know hte equation of the straight line he takes

u kno the co-ordinate of player 2 and the radius

from that point minus both radius on the line he takes...

am i making sense?

btw what lvel is this? seems kinda easy, just weird how hows theyve set out the example

Its not really that easy :|

you need to find out where this:

0.0625X^2 + 0.0625Y^2 - 1.43X - Y + 5.726

is equal to this:

0.43X + 0.714

It's 1st year uni. Doing a games course, so we've only been doing maths for a few weeks.

It is quite simple but it's not really clear what's being asked.

wow, what uni u at?
im at glasgow caledonian doing just general computing, we did the same maths course as the games development guys tho It was nowhere near as hard as that. (Although, the theory in that isnt too hard, they just gave you evil coords to use)

Yes it is, they want to know the coords of the centre of circle 1 when the circumferences of the 2 circles meet.

edit: re-read question, i suppose the question about seperations is ambiguious, do they mean space between outer of circle or spaces between centres. The part the OP asked tho isnt.

In simple terms (as far as I understand them)

A) What is the equation needed to go from (3,2) to (10,5)
B) Distance between (3,2) and (8,8)
C) Distance between p1 and p2 when they collide.
D) What are p1's co-ordinates when it collides with p2

Lincoln.

That's what got me, I presume that seperation is from one collision area to another.

I would think that for this one you would find the difference between the 2 outer edges (by finding the distance between the points as you said, and subtracting the 2 radii) considering it is worth 5 marks.

Suerly the distance between player 1 and 2 is when they collide is always going to be 5?

Yep i think so. Its only worth a couple of marks so there isnt any major calculations required.
