Help me cook my steak!

Hello all,

Well, the thread title says it all really. I picked up what appears to be a nice cut of sirloin earlier on, and I'm planning on having it for dinner, but I've just realised (even after extensive Googling) that I don't really know how to cook it :o

I'd like it medium rare, how long should I have it on my George Foreman grill? (Or perhaps there's a better way of cooking it?) Do I need to prepare the steak in any way, marinades, salt or pepper etc? It's just going to be a steak and chips affair really, with a bit of salad.

I feel like such a n00b. :o
 
George Forman will do just fine - a little salt and pepper, maybe a little olive oil, and 3-4 minutes for medium-rare. If it's still undercooked after this, stick it on again for a few more minutes. Easy.
 
hmm, im really in the mood for a nice steak now. might have to pop out and buy one..

grilled with a bit of pepper.. yum
 
I like to put some olive oil, rosemary salt, pepper and a bit of garlic on it, then griddle it for about a minute each side (which is roughly medium rare). If it's a really thick steak cover in cling film and beat it with your fists til it's a bit thinner (and now longer).
 
Don't grill steak, that's just wrong. Fry it, in a pan, it's the only way. About 2 mins each side should do nicely.
 
Please dont wreck it on the Foreman!!... i have to hold myself back from my housemate when he buys a steak only to leave it in that thing for 10 minutes :(

If you want a simple steak, just rub some salt and pepper into each side, get a griddle pan, put a bit of olive oil in it, let it heat up (hot!) and wack it in. Let the steak sit in the same place for a little - dont be tempted to move it around the pan - it wants to seal (i think), plus you'll wreck the nice grill lines :p

When its been on there for a few minutes (<5 i think, i never time properly, just watch it), flip it over and do the same on the other side. When its been on there for <5mins, turn the pan OFF and let it sit for a few minutes whilst you prepare the rest of your meal. This sounds daft but letting the steak sit (dont worry about it getting cold - it shouldnt do) for a few minutes really makes it 10 times more tender. It'll also help cook the middle a bit more. Good luck, and please for the love of god dont over-cook it :(
 
Do NOT george foreman it, No no no no no no nonoononononononoo.

That thing dries it out big time.

This is what you do

1 - Heat pan real hot - I prefer Cast Iron Grill
2 - you can either cover the steak in some olive oil or put some in the pan
3 - wack it on
4 - Turn when you see the side cooked to half way
5 - Poke it now and again, by poking it you can feel how "stiff" or "tender" it is inside. If it's stiff then it's cooked inside and you've done it too long.
6 - Wack it on a plate with some Chips and serve. Idealy let it rest for a few minutes before cutting into it to let it rest.
 
Use a proper griddle - the hotter the better for steaks.

You need to cook the outside quickly, without cooking the inside - the breakdown of the proteins (the browning of the meat) adds most of the flavour.

A cooler heat will, as you get in these silly electric grills, ends up heating up the water content of the meat too much - effectively boiling the meat.

True. I couldn't imagine cooking a steak in a George Foreman though, you'd lose all the juices. Cook it in a pan.

That will dry it out and lose all your flavors, i do mine in the frying pan, little olive oil and pepper and about 2-3 minutes each side.
 
Okay then, George Foreman no no (I think that's the jist of what Raymond Lin and Scam were saying... :p )

However... I don't have a griddle pan :(

Will a standard frying pan do?

Edit: Just realised how stupid above question might sound, but meh, I want a nice steak!
 
If its a frying pan, copper or aluminium is better. The key is get it HOT, there will be smoke so open the windows. You can season it before it goes into the pan, and then once its in, flip and poke a bit and serve.
 
Griddle or Grill (if careful)- bit of salt, pepper and some freshly chopped garlic rubbed into the surface, once cooked rest and melt a little real butter on top :D:D:D
