Help me get into something quick 3-5k

Same here, cheaper to buy, own and insure than an evo - no ayc fluid changes needed just 1 service a year and ideally an oil change every 6 months. Later classics run on 16" rims and decent mid range tyres can be had for £60 a corner. Plenty of tuning options and predictable handling with stupid amounts of grip - ideal for a first 'fast' car!

The AYC fluid change is nothing in all honesty. It's a myth that this is expensive and difficult, so should barely need mentioning in Evo buying threads.

As long as it's been done regularly/on time by previous owners then it will cause no problems.

I might be wrong but I think he said he was doing 18 miles a day for his commute, on a basic level that's 4680 miles a year. An oil service is every 4500 miles so the cost of Evo ownership wouldn't be far off an Impreza.

Aren't earlier Subaru's known to melt piston number 3 in standard form due to the positioning of the turbo?

I suspect you'll find that you can pick up better condition lower mileage 182's than you can Civic Type R's for the money.

One vote for the 182 from me - managed to pick up a 2005 182 cup with 55k on for £3500 + a scabby astra whereas my brother has a 2005 type r premium that are still selling for cira 8k....

Accord Type R?

Fair enough, they're getting on a bit now, but still meant to be a very capable car - and should be avaliable at the lower end of your budget which is a bonus!

Good shout this.

Have you considered a Nissan 200SX? Autos can be picked up cheap and a very tidy manual can be had within your budget without much looking.

I can wait a while and expand my budget. Another 3 months another 1k I'm in no huge rush. I thought 5k would have been reasonable.

i'm going to look at a 182 with the cup pack today. it's an 05plate with the cup pack. 61k on the clock and on for a shade under 7K

going to try to knock him down as it's trade or maximise the px for the focus

Suggesting purely because the budget would buy a great one... Octavia vRS :p

OK so not huge fun to drive but you won't be scraping the dregs at the bottom of the market for £4k.

Other than that the Clio sounds like a good bet if you don't need the practicality of the Octy.

I'm not sure if the piston issue is common tbh, the old ej20 block can't take a lot of extra power without a forged rebuild and so many people blow them up by running too much power on the stock internals. I know the evo engines are a lot stronger as standard! I'm sure evo and scoob ownership costs aren't massively apart but being a scoob driver I'm biased and so would always reccomend one over an evo :p
