Help me overclock a E6600 to 3ghz

Tried that.

The memory went to PC2-3200 on startup screen, went to bios, changed it to PC2-667, saved it, comp turned off when i saved changes.

Then loaded up by itself, said PC2-5300 got to 1 bar of XP loading then froze.

Pressed reset-Pc turned off- went into bios changed settings>saved them>pc turned off!

These are my fall back settings, I take some pics at the first 100% stable clock in case I lose the lot later.

Ok, better. Time to up the core voltage 0.025v at a time stop at 1.45v. Make cpu settings look like this.

I dont wanna up the voltage any more than 1.35 :( I give up :(
Fair enough, but that's the top end of stock. You may not get any further with out a little boost. Don't be to worried, it won't die, just keep an eye on the temperatures.

I guess mate, but Im just annoyed everyone else seems to be able to get over 3ghz on 1.35v or less? :(

Is my RAM to blame in any way?
Not at 333, that's less than stock speeds for 5400. Of course you may have a bad stick, it happens. If its ok at stock with the same speeds its not the ram. Easy to find out. Wind it back to 266, stick the ram up to the 665 setting and test it.

Overclocking's like that, each chip is different, your not far off if it tries to start. Find the stable settings and look at the temperatures. If you not happy with the voltages wind it down, but find the limit within the safe range. 1.5v and less that 65C core temp will not kill the chip, not for few years anyway.

Ok,

Tried 1.375, same.

Tried 1.4, booted into windows almost, then turned off.

So either my cpu is a naff clocker, or this Asus board sucks, or the memory sucks...

Maybe the chip, but I doubt it. The boards good for 400 easy, unless its a bad one, what's the Vmch?. And the memory is easily taken out of the equation, either test it at stock or underclock it at the higher FSB. I'd pay more attention to the temperatures, if its failling over so low, what are they at stock with 100% load? MB and CPU.

I dont know what vmch is?

My CPU temps now in windows are;

26 CPU

38 Motherboard

Im using Arctic Cooler 7 on the CPU and have good airflow in case so can't be the temp.

By test do you mean memtest the ram?

That could explain a few things, you'll not get far without putting up the mch voltage. go to the voltages under the cpu settings look for mch, put it at 1.6v. And Vfsb to 1.3v while your at it.

At load? Sure, both cores?

Yes it can, you may have bad contact, easily done.

Memtest is good, or sp2004 on blend.

Your getting there, it's takes a bit of time and effort, but its worth it.

When I overclocked it to 3Ghz, I just disabled Hyper Path 3. Then i upped the voltage to 1.35 IIRC and just increase the FSB to 333. I think the motherboard runs at 1:1 divider as default which means 667 (PC-5300).

Since your ram is PC-5400 its speed is 675Mhz so it will handle 3Ghz easily. :)

When I did my first oc of this E6600... I just put it at 335fsb to see what happened... booted up straight away perfectly stable at stock volts @ 3GHz... as I'm only on stock cooling - I haven't pushed past 1.35 volts / 380FSB yet... will do when I get my Freezer 7

Fastest I've had the chip so far is 3.42... at the moment I'm running 3.15 (350x9) 1:1 with some crummy kingston 667 stuff (corsair here tomorrow) on stock volts

Here's my Super Pi:

See sig for 3D Marks... this processor kicks arse!!!

Didn't take cpu-z when at 3.42... nvm - will do more when I start putting some volts through it

Also... what's this Hyper Path 3 option do? I've left it at default... so would guess it's enabled

I've read elsewhere to disable that when you go for higher clocks. Can't remember the reason though :o

I changed Vmch to 1.60 and the other vfsb thing to 1.30v

Changed memory to 1.95V

Would only load windows if CPU was set @ 1.42V, but then crashed (comp turned off) during 3dmark05.

Temps during the 3d mark were CPU 36degrees MB 41degrees.

:(

Getting closer, I use Vfsb=1.4v Vmch=1.65v Vich=1.2v

If you haven't already, I'd recommend putting some decent thermal grease on the north and southbridge cooling. Like this I'm suspicious your E6600 is failing at 3GHz with those volts and temps, I'd place a small bet the NB contact is bad. Not that it helps you any, but I get 3.5GHz with 1.45v

My rig is on 3 Ghz using 1.325 VCore.

Im using the 0801 BIOS atm

Running the RAM @ 833MHz on 2.0 Volts and timings of 5-5-5-15-5
I have Corsair TwinX XMS Pros 6400

All settings ie VMch , FSBTerm are on Auto.

I have my E6600 at 3ghz with no extra volts needed, I cant believe how good these conroes clock. I put my ram at 833mhz its Gskill 6400 NR by the way. :)

Somethings definately wrong with mine then, I can't surely be the only Conroe that needs 1.45V or more to get into Windows @ 3ghz!!?

Maybe my RAM being @ DDR2-667 isnt good enough...
