Have to echo this. I had one for a few years and easily averaged over 40mpg out of it and although it doesn't look sporty it feels very decent for a bog standard hatch (particularly the gear change).

If you can stretch for it, the sport is a very nice small car.

The swift does look nice.
Looking for a good priced one atm.
If I can't find one I think the Fiat grande punto will be the one to buy.

That's the problem. It's french! The megane has cost stupid amounts and it's french!!!! Unless the clip is a class above it i won't touch it

0-60 in 9 secs, 55mpg, sub £3k if you get over 100k miles.

But quite rare, as they were only sold for about a year.

Why wouldn't it? I get 50-60mpg quite easily from a 2.0tdi. I would imagine it would be even easier with a smaller engine.

Pretty much the same car as a Fabia VRS and Ibiza FR/ TDI Sport 130 as it used the PD130 engine.
I like the Polo but you pay a premium for the badge.
Other PD130's are in VW Bora, Golf TDI, Seat Leon and Toledo and the Skoda Octavia I think.
I was tempted myself last year but ended up with a 1.6 petrol Golf which I'm bored of already.

Bit if an oddball but have you considered a Mitsubishi Colt CZT?

0-60 in 8 secs. Reliable, quoted 42 mpg average and there should be a fair few available at 3k.
