Help me pick a car :D

Theres nothing wrong with a Golf GTI reliability wise if you choose a good one. You wont get a good Mk5 (2004-2009) GTi in your budget but you could pick up a nice Mk4 GTi with the 1.8T engine which is pretty reliable.
There's nothing really WRONG with it. It's just not as good as a lot of competitors, so unless you're getting it for a storming price (which this isn't) it never makes much sense.
That one is £4500 for a run of the mill 9 year old hatchback. You could spend 2k on a petrol ford focus from around 2004/5 and have the £2500 leftover to use to run it for 1-2 years.
Cars don't just die when they reach x miles. You can miss out on some great cars if you ignore them purely based on miles.
I hear ya, more so when the car I wanted had a new clutch and fly wheel like 7k previous so was perfect... but he said no and I had to do ands he said.
The one I'm looking and at tomorrow is 50k miles but it's alloys are crap. Ruined. So I'm going to tell him to knock 4 x 95£ off for a start to get halfords to refurbish them and then anything else. Hoping to get him below 4k
So... I bought a car today.
I decided i could deal with the extra fuel consumption if i liked the car enough so i went for a Renault Clio.
Yes i know I said NO FRENCH CAR's, But it had a 2 year warranty included so if anything goes wrong I am covered thus being a Renault didn't bother me.
Its a Clio Sport 2.0L 172 16V. And my god when you boot it it flies!
It was £2,250. Had to pay £260 Tax ontop of that.
Now there are some issues with it which the dealer did say they are going to cover repair wise:
Exhaust is blowing, needs some welding work.
The Fan inside doesn't work so there is no air coming from any of the internal vents
I will ask them to book it in on Tuesday and i will pick it up wed/thursday after work so hopefully all the issues are sorted.
I hope my choice meets OCUK Motor peeps approval!

That seems like a very large amount of money for a 12 year old Clio? Surely thats 182 money? Has it just had a recent belt change or something as I realise thats a significantly expensive piece of work that can make it worth paying more for one?
Its a 2004 Clio, So only 10 years old. with 60k Miles on the clock.
Its had a new clutch @ 48k along with some other stuff.
Just Insured it this moment, and was £580. I thought that's not too bad, asked the man to add the wife and the price came to £331!!! WTF it just lost over £200 because i added my wife to the policy?!
Cant complain though as the saving paid for the tax

Steering wheel thumb grips (looks like a dog ate one)
Gear Lever Gaitor (found on one ebay with clips for £12.00)

Yes the whole 3dr thing is a pain, but my friends had a little ride along this evening and didn't mind too much.

Will be getting some putty tomorrow after work and having a play. I will then trim the wheel with a leather cover. Should make it look tidy

Make sure its had its cambelt done otherwise book it in NOW, the F4R is a cracking engine but it NEEDS to have its belt & water pump changed on time. It's not a cheap job as it needs to be done by a specialist as your everyday mechanic won't have the specialist tools to do the job.
I would assume for the higher than average price you've paid for a 172 they'd have been done but make sure you double check anyway.
EDIT: Actually even if it had its belt changed 5 years ago as per schedule it'll be due again for its 2nd change by now, It's 72k or every 5 years on those.

Failure of the belts will NOT be covered by the warranty if you've not had them changed as per the manufacturers recommendation, and it would almost certainly destroy the engine.
It's critical that it's done according to specs and unfortunately on the 172 it's a pretty involved and very expensive job, I think it's circa £500, so as you can imagine whether its been done or not greatly affects the value of the car now they are this cheap.
Don't delay.
Oh I'm sorry I'm not a sodding expert.
I will ask the garage that's doing other repairs if it looks like it's in need of a new belt. If it does then I will suck it up and save for a couple months and get it done.
