Been trying all evening to remember a couple of games that I played the demos of over and over and over again back in the late 90s, probably 1999 but could have been 2000.

First one had you flying around a map/level in a ship-type thing collecting coloured spheres which would link in a chain that would be carried from the back of the ship, and you had to fly through a large ring that was in the centre of the map to 'collect' the spheres. I seem to remember that it had an online mode so there'd be quite a few of you all trying to do the same thing, and you could steal spheres from other players and possibly use weapons/powerups. You could go wherever you wanted though, it wasn't a set course like Wipeout.

The second was in space, again you were in a ship and it had you shooting asteroids (possibly for mining purposes) as well as enemies with various weapons, although the main weapon I remember was a rapid-fire type thing with two barrels, one on either side of the viewpoint. Vague as it gets I know, but that's all I can really recall.

Any ideas at all? I imagine they were on a PC Magazine demo disc because my step-dad used to be subscribed to it at the time.

Edit: I think the first one had 'ball' in the name somewhere.

Can't help you with yours mate, but I'd like to mention I've also been trying to hunt down a vertical scrolling shooter for years..

I want to say mine had "Fox" in the title? And something which I remember clearly is these blue cubes which would roll down the screen from top to bottom.

Left the disc in the drive when the PC went in for repair and never saw it again :(

No matches yet guys, but thanks. It's rather frustrating, I must have played them over and over and over and yet I can't quite picture the names in my head...

Star fox?

the 2nd one is abit vague, but there arn't a lot of space type games.

what about X Beyond the Frontier?
that sounds simlar, and came out in 1999

Tachyon: The Fringe

This would've been my suggestion too, I remember getting it on a PC magazine demo disk in 2000.

Starlancer? (gah too late)

Freespace 2
Allegiance
Terminus
Bang! Gunship Elite

After that I'm fresh out of ideas :D

I think I played the first game on the 3DO! You were in a space ship right, but flying over large cities? And collecting these crystals...I seem to remember flying through rings too.

I'll never remember the name though.
