There always one that don't read the OP replys before posting.....why did u need to give ur steam account to them?
could you of not created one for them?
Would it not have been wiser to create a new account for your children rather than give in by doing the opposite? Even pop some money into a Steam wallet for them to enjoy spending.
Maybe I am naive, I'm not a parent thankfully, but I always thought no meant no. Therefore telling your kids not to use your account, but their newly created account would surely solve your problem.

I would be grateful if anyone could gift me any old duplicate copies they have of games such as HL/L4D and that sort of thing

Who remembers being a kid with loads of time but no games? Forced to play PC gamer demo disks and stuff. If he rarely plays the majority of the games then this is a nice touch.
I guess you've already got HL2?
Get rid of the kids, only option.
Thinking about it... Can you set the games to offline mode on one of the PCs and then play them on both? Or won't that work?
