Help me to ban plastic bags.

Can we have a petition to ban online petitions?

They're useless, pointless, and serve only to perpetuate the notion that participating in democracy is something that can be done with a few mouse clicks.

I usually take old carrier bags with me to the supermarket to use again... they're still perfectly good. The best way to recycle is to reuse, unfortunatly I still have hundreds in my house fom when I cared less.

I wonder how much money the supermarkets would save if they didn't need to supply plastic bags... Maybe a way to get people reusing their carrier bags is if supermarkets started charging for them again, or gave a (very small) discount to shoppers reusing bags?

Some stores do give you store card points.

I always reuse mine when shopping, as well as handing all my saved up ones to the students' union shop. They collect them to reuse.

Banning plastic bags isn't practical unless eco-friendly alternatives are available more. Charging people to use them is better as it wouldn't affect me.

I'll only sign it if you promise I won't get another "thanks but up yours" email from the PM when it finishes.
Quite. When the PM ignores a petition which gets nearly two million signatures, it shows the futility of it all :(

I think people should be charged at least 5p for each plastic bag they use. At least then they'll think about keeping the ones they have and taking them back again to re-use.

They do this in South Africa ;)
And it has worked!

Whats the problem with plastic bags?

I found an tesco's bag in an old set of draws. Had probably been there for a few years. When I picked it up it just disintegrated.

I'm most supermarket bags are exectly the same and will degrade fairly well.

I have 300 plastic bags in my cupboard, I get new ones every time I go shopping and sometimes they go directly in the bin afterwards! I miss the apathy of the 90's.
Did you count them? :p I chuck most of mine in the bin. I like the apathy of the 00s ;)
