Help me to ban plastic bags.

What about the 58 million who didnt sign it?
If two million bothered to sign it then obviously millions more, probably the majority of the public agreed with the petitioners. I doubt many online petitions will ever get more votes so if one with two million is ignored, it makes the rest of them rather pointless doesn't it?

Pretty much, yeah.

We have some of the black nylon bags from Tesco, as I got really sick of throwing out so many plastic bags. I'm not so great at remembering to take them in when I go shopping, even though they're kept in the car.

I fail to see how that is in any way 'obvious'

Would you agree that if 20 million people vote for Labour in an election then the tens of millions who didnt vote Labour would probably do so as well?

I suspect not.

I'll only sign it if you promise I won't get another "thanks but up yours" email from the PM when it finishes.

both the petition i have signed up to, and advertized here passed and both worked. The vehicle tracking has been scrapped for the moment and N.I water charges are being removed at the end of the year and a new system will be put into place.

Thanks for your help guys!

I use too many plastic bags, mainly because I'm too damn forgetful to bring reusable bags with me when I go shopping.

It wouldnt bother me if they were banned outright, and tescos only sold the cotton (or whatever material it is) re-usable and biodegradable bags at checkouts for a reasonably high price per bag. At least it might jog my memory a bit more :)

And presumably you know for a fact that it was down to the petition, and not what the government were planning to do anyway?

A million protested in the streets of London against the Iraq war. Would you agree that more than a million Britons opposed the war? I suspect so.

Yes I would agree, but its a long way to suppose that the majority of the british people opposed the war. To extrapolate from 1 million people marching in London to suggesting that 30 million people were against the war is a mighty stretch.

So to suggest that 2 million people signing a petition is an indication that the notion at ahnd is supported by the majority of the UK population is dubious at best.

Supermarkets in Australia have been doing this for a few years now, got rid of all the plastic bags and have canvas bags that you keep and re-use. Its a much better idea.

I did say 'probably' the majority of the public :) More likely, the majority of drivers. If we include the entire public it would include children and career benefit claimants etc.
