Help me with my bike rattle cycling brothers - please

This is doing my head in.
My bike has developed a rattle/noise and I can't find it. If I turn the bike upside down I get no noise at all when spinning the wheels. The noise gets louder when I'm freewheeling! I can also feel the clicking through my feet and obviously if I put my hand on the frame.

Help me oh wise ones.

No to the wheel having any side play.

Just found where the freehub is, makes sense but zero sound when it's upside down.

Just found where the freehub is, makes sense but zero sound when it's upside down.

Much less torque and weight on the axels when the bike is upside down and you are spinning the pedals so often you can't replicate these things like that.

Have you had the wheel out of the dropouts recently? It might be skipping if it's not seated properly.

The fact that it's worse when freewheeling definitely points to something at the back wheel rather than at the pedals, and that it happens at all when freewheeling suggests it's not to do with the chain eg bad routing through the derailleur jockey wheels.

Something around the freehub does seem most likely. It's odd that it doesn't happen when pedalling with the bike upside down, but that could be to do with having weight on the wheel.

I'd say a bearing has gone in the freehub. With no pressure or weight on the others will spin fine, but with pressure on the crumbled one will cause issues.

I haven't had the back wheel off but I will resit tomorrow just in case.

This morning it was still making the noise and after saying good morning to Mark Hughes on the Britannia Stadium car park (serious) I realised I had to stand up, it still made the noise.
Now I can't remember if it made the noise all the way to work but when I came out and rode home it was silent
5 out of 6 commutes have been noisy except the last one, it doesn't make sense.

My old bike had the exact same rattle. For me it was the freehub.

Free hub on the rear, I'd say that you have lost/mangled one or two bearings. You won't get the noise upside down as their isn't enough weight on the wheel. Also check your wheel is true after you get it sorted, I'd a similar problen and the rim had to be replaced as I didn't notice in time.

The way it manifests has disappeared. The problem has not.

It's your call, but personally I'd be choosing not to continue riding around on a wheel that could fall apart at any second.
