Help Media Studies

Have but their a bit random with what they show and when.

Thought it might be a good conversation topic anyway lol.

With the media playing such an important part in our everyday lives, ranging from entertaining us to shaping our viewpoints on the world and influencing our political and ethical groundings, surely there is a more than valid case to be made for subjecting the subject to critical analysis.

(BA Hons Film and TV graduate :D)

Absolutley, its like saying ICt's a joke, its not, both media and ICT are becoming really important in todays world, they go hand in hand well. and along with marketing could make you rich. :).

Pitty some people are still old fashioned about it and beleive that knowing how to work out the length to a side of a triangle is more important than understanding the information the world gives to us and how we should decypher it.

Media Studies has to be the biggest joke of a subject ever.

I found it really interesting. A Level teaches you great analytical skills, and it made me far more observant. I enjoy movies so much more having done that course, so I'm not sure I agree with that.

Why do you say that? Have you studied it or are you just going by generalisations? Do you think English is a joke subject?

Media Studies, in my case, was pretty much English but instead of historical texts and novels it focused on current issues; television programmes, documentaries and newspapers. I only did it at A Level and it was the most enjoyable subject I've taken, I am quite good at English but wanted to take Media instead, due to being more relevant in todays society. And as with sic it's made me appreciate a wider range of film & tv than before.

Lol, bit of a silly thing to say. Where else do you discuss Kierkegaard, L. Ron Hubbard and the Taxi Driver killing scene all in the space of 3 hours?. I think media studies courses differ dramatically from uni to uni, but if you get a good one it can be very enlightening.

I'm not saying it isn't an interesting area but I'd hardly rate it as a serious academic subject. Especially given the number of complete dossers that opt to pursue it. One of my best friends from uni is pretty high up in a large buying agency in London, he didn't require a media studies degree to get where he is now. He did business studies and you'll find quite a few of the creatives are obviously artists etc..

Didn't read this before but at A level I studied ICT & Media (and physics) and am now doing a degree in Marketing. I'll be rich! :p

what the hell does your mate have to do with this? He's not doing anything media related by the sounds of things!

I'm afraid i'm going to have to partly agree with dowie. I think Media Studies is a bit of a "doss" subject. Although it may be important to others, to me, it generally seems that the people who really shouldn't be at university, are and are doing film studies/media studies etc. I have mates which are doing degrees like media studies and they don't do a lot to be perfectly honest.

This for GCSE? Where you get the paper before the exam and you are supposed to write your answers and then remember for the exam?

I'm afraid this sentence (^^) may sum up media studies, better than i could.

As someone who did Media Studies at school, then did a Bsc which was part media and part technology and now works in the media making films.... I can say that there is nothing wrong with doing a Media degree unless you intend to use it. Most people don't go into Media (which is why you often see that statistic) because its a very competitive industry and almost everyone has to start at the bottom as a runner/dish-washer/servant/slave/dispatcher.
