Hey guys,

So I bought the parts for a computer, and they were delivered yesterday. I built it, and this morning I tried to install windows.

I got pretty much this

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £173.99
1 x MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £77.38
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) £68.99
1 x Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £54.98
1 x GeIL Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £39.95
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £31.99
1 x Samsung SH-S222BB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £476.36 (includes shipping : £11.75).

But when trying to install windows, following the newegg video tutorial, it was all going well until on the first install the computer went back to asking me if I wanted to install windows again, although it was supposed to be in the middle of installing. It wouldn't let me continue, saying I couldn't load windows onto my hard drive.

I restarted my computer, and it let me install windows this time, but THIS TIME after restarting after apparently finishing installing windows my computer says....

A disk read error occurred.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

And no matter how many times I restart it just says this every time

PLEASE HELP

Ok thanks for the help.

So my motherboard only came with 2 SATA cables I think, and I am using one for the disc drive and one for the hard drive so I can't use a new cable.

I am trying a different SATA port, and so far the screen has not come up and I am having to reinstall windows.

Hopefully this works!

if it doesn't it will be worth swapping the cables over between cd/dvd and hard drive to see if the issue moves to the cd/dvd.

Hey,

So I swapped around cables etc and reinstalled windows. It seemed to install ok and restarted but now it first said 'starting windows' or something similar but has now been on a black screen for about 10 minutes.

I'm considering restarting, but I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience and if restarting is the right thing to do here

I think I am seeing the issue.

In BIOS, it is showing any SATA port that I try and connect my hard drive to as having nothing connected to it.

To be clear, using my modular PSU I have a cable that has 3 heads on it that fit both the CD drive and the hard drive. I am allowed to use the one cable for both devices right?

PS. yes it is the original windows disc

Ok so here is an update.

My BIOS doesn't recognise the hard drive, so it gives a disk read error.
When I am installing windows, on the other hand, the hard drive is recognised, along with how much space is left on it and when it is partitioned or not.
On the boot list the hard drive is sometimes there, and sometimes not.

This leads me to believe it may not be a problem with the hard drive itself.

This thread http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/14361-bios-doesnt-recognize-hard-drive-but-windows-does.html

resolves with the guy fixing his problem by pressing something on his power supply?!

My PSU is modular, could there be something in this? I have stuck on cable in to connect to the cd drive and the hard drive, and the cd drive is fine, but i dont know if there is something there that is the issue.

Please someone help me!

My hard drive doesn't have a jumper, so I am at a loss.
Now neither the BIOS nor windows can detect the hard drive so I am concluding that it is DOA. There must be something wrong with it.
I will contact overclockers support again, although last time the guy just kept mumbling caddy at me.

Try a CMOS reset.

If the mobo can't see the HDD in the BIOS then the HDD itself could be faulty. If it can see the DVD drive but not the HDD I wouldn't be ready to blame the mobo just yet.

CMOS reset by the jumper on the mobo or by powering off the PSU and popping out the battery for a min or so. See where that gets you

battery? I thought laptops had batteries not computers?

edit: sorry for the stupidity, I see the battery now

have you tried a different power lead into the HD, or tried swapping the power connectors between the cd/dvd and hd ?

Took the battery out a couple of minutes, back in.

BIOS doesn't detect the HDD.
Windows doesn't detect either..

So that's that. I have my RMA number to return the hard drive for a replacement.

Just on the off chance anyone has done this before, so I don't mess up, what did you use as a 'plain outer box'? Could I use an amazon envelope for example?

Did you flick the PSU switch off before removing the battery?

I would make sure you pack it in a box with padding (newspaper etc). If you send it back in a Jiffy bag and it gets damaged which is highly likely as HDD's are fragile, you will get blamed for the damage and might not get a replacement.

Pack it into a shoe box with loads of newspaper around :)

Yep, left it off with the switch for a few minutes, then took the battery out for a few minutes, then battery in then switch on then turn on.

Thanks, I will definitely do this.

try it again, this time once you've switched it off and removed the battery, press the power button, should see your fans flick as though there attempting to start then settle back still.

then leave for a few minutes, battery in then switch on then turn on.
