I'm wanting to change a light fitting from a flush to the ceiling style to a rose and hanging light, but am stuck at stage one - removing he old unit :(

I can't figure out how to remove the 4 cables from the current fitting. I was expecting to find 4 small screws which hold each wire. I have undone the one screw holding the two eatrth cables but that purely secures those.

The white bulb holder is fixed in place to the base plate by a small screw on the other side of the base plate, but I haven't got enough slack in the cable to get to the underside. Regardless I can't see how removing the bulb holder from the base plate will allow me to remove the cables?

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I hate failing at the first hurdle of a job which I thought should be doable! I also don't fancy ripping it to pieces as I need to be able to reverse things if there is a problem.

Cheers

Can you remove the bulb socket from that metal plate that it's mounted on? There's probably clips underneath.

No, there is not enough flex in the cable to get underneath the plate to get at the screw. The plastic above the blue cable feels flat and the same as the plastic visible under the black cable

No clips down the gaps to the sides of the cables? The sort of thing you'd just push in with a tiny screw driver? If you look in line with the earth screw you should be able to see in.

Looks like a push fit. Stick a small terminal screw driver in the slot to the right to release the spring. Goes without saying, make sure the circuit is isolated or you might get a belt off the neutral.

Yes I have just read on an Amazon review that they are push fit, however I don't seem to be having any joy trying to locate any release springs?! I have stuck a driver down that hole and there doesn't feel to be anything. The wires are absolutely held in tight.

Arggh it can't be this hard!!

Looks like that lamp passes through to another lampred and black being old style wiring brown and blue being the extension.

Unscrew the earth bar and see it the bulb fitting will come loose.

With the power off

Don't over think it

Just pull them out with needle noise pliers ideally or pull and twist and they will come out, or just cut them and lose about 1" or less of the wires

Yeah I think I'll have to do this, was just trying not to be ham fisted in case I need to revert back to it.

Regarding the cables and matching them up to the new rose, am I right I thinking that the Red is Live, Black N and the blue and brown are for the Loop?

Cheers

red and brown are both switch live, blue and black both neutral

are there 2 lights controlled by the same switch by the look of it?

Edit: to replace with pendant just keep the wiring the same, red and black together, blue black together, in switch live and neutral terminals on pendant

you might find more wiring after the light is down that was up in the ceiling or maybe your wired loop at switch and just have 1 cable at each light and this has 2 because it brings another light on at the same time

Thanks for the help HardwareGeek and it seems you know your stuff compared to me! Yes there are two hallway lights on the switch.

Here is a pic of the new rose (with 3xN, 3xLoop and 3xL) and its wiring diagram.

Any final guidance on how to map these 4 wires really is greatly appreciated!

You need to put blue and black in the neutral terminal that has the blue in currently

and put the brown and red in the switch live terminal where the brown is currently

nothing in the middle terminal

Thanks again mate. Had to wait for the weekend to tackle it in the light and have just done it and pleased to report I didn't shock myself and the lights works great.

Now I just need to find a larger rose as there wasn't much plasterboard left around the hole the cable comes through for me to secure it to the ceiling!
