Hi all

I could really do with some help.

I'm out bike touring and normally on my smartphone I use Google maps on a browser (chrome) to plot a cycle route, then copy the url into this site to convert it into a gpx file:

https://www.gpsvisualizer.com/

then a quick sd card switch to load it onto the garmin bike sat nav and I'm good to go. I'm now having problems, gpx visualizer now needs an API key, I've set up an account on the Google cloud platform and created my own API key, but when I enter this code on GPS visualizer it says :API key origin error, no other details.

On the cloud platform below the API key I've generated it says:

Use this key in your application by passing it with key=API_KEY parameter.

I don't know what this means :( As you've probably guessed I'm out of my depth, I managed today by checking my phone at junctions but this isn't ideal, I need to stay on backroads to avoid the lethal A roads.

Can someone please help?

This probably belongs on the HTML, Graphics and Web Design forum. It's ultimately a web request issue.

How are you entering the key? If it's a text string have you definitely typed/pasted it correctly? No spaces at start or end, etc.

It could be down to the label of the key being different but I don't know how you'd correct that on the device :( Have you had a look to see if other Garmin users have had this issue?

Hi benski thanks for responding.

Double checked I pasted it correctly, this process works fine on my desktop pc plotting routes for day rides, but I'm in a tent at the moment!

And, have you tried the below:

Using "My Maps" to convert Google directions
(no API Key required)
If you just need to convert a Google Maps driving/walking/biking route to GPX, you can create the route in Google's "My Maps" feature, and GPS Visualizer will still be able to read it, as long as "sharing" has been enabled.

  • Go to https://www.google.com/maps/d/. Sign in if you are not already logged into a Google account.
  • Click on Create a new map.
  • In the map-drawing interface's toolbar, click on the "add directions" button ().
  • Enter your beginning and ending points. You can also add additional destinations, or drag the route to a different road, just like in the normal Google Maps interface.
  • Click Share in the sidebar (). Name your map.
  • Under Who has access," click Change... and then select On - anyone with the link.

I had a similar issue to this recently with regards to my API key not working and had to enter a credit card into my Google account to get things working.

I've not been charged as they give you a free hefty allowance.

Using the free option I get this:

Have you tried ViewRanger? I use that to map/plot my route - flipping between the OpenCycleMap and satelite view helps to plot, and the built in topography map helps work out good "gradual" climbs and steeper descents. Once saved into ViewRanger you can then export as a gpx for Garmin/etc.

all free too
