Help on easy way to upgrade HD

I'm thinking of upgrading my Maxtor HD. I don't want to repeat the install of all the apps on my original disk again.

Could I make the new hard disk bootable and then copy everything from the old one to the new one through Windows Explorer? Then remove the old HD and run off the new one?

Sorry its such a basic question but in the past I've usually done a re-install, I want a easy quick way to swap the old drive with the new one and copy over the data.

If you want to copy everything, including the OS, you will have to use either Acronis Trueimage or Norton Ghost to 'clone' the disk.
