Hi there,

I have an old Nokia phone that is about to give up the ghost and I need a new phone - a Smartphone.

The problem is that there is such a huge amount of choice out there and I have never really kept up to date with the latest phones.

My main condition is that the phone needs to be sim-free and that I don't really want to spend masses on a phone, considering this is my first Smart one - I may well get something towards the Galaxy S II in the future!

Anyway, so far I have seen the Wildfire S, Galaxy Ace, HTC Explorer and the Sony Ericcson Xperia mini and they all seem quite similar in terms of spec and price. I have also heard that the San Francisco II is looking pretty promising but unlikely that this is going to be unlockable, so I don't really want to be stuck with orange.

Any advice on what I should be looking for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Orange Monte Carlo?

Just got one myself, rooted and flashed a new ROM so none of the Orange rubbish and it can be unlocked.

Flash is useful to a point but only if you really intend to visit sites with it on otherwise all phones with it and without manage OK.

Smart phone without flash support seems pointless to me as well. I am looking to get one soon and I'd want it to do everything with no limitations. I am seeing Samsung Galaxy and HTC Desire are the main competitors still?

Don't get the Galaxy Ace. That's all I'm saying. My missus has one and it's rubbish. Quite simply rubbish.

Exactly. It simply isn't important really.

Despite what people may lead you to believe, it's a very niche feature and I doubt it genuinely gets used very often by most of the people that claim to 'need' flash. Aside from that, Adobe have dropped support of it anyway so it will be redundant in future, with HTML5 taking its place.

I thought they had back-tracked on that one?

It really is so difficult to decide.

The Monte Carlo does look good, but then from what I have read, if you spend a bit more, you get masses more phone.

What is the sweetspot at the moment?

Having looked at the Desire S as mentioned by Robbo, it gets very very good reviews - getting quite pricey at around the £280 mark, but is it worth it?

Robbo - you said that they other one to look out for is the Samsung Galaxy. There are quite a lot out there, which Galaxy model were you referring to?

I personally think the Galaxy Nexus is the best Android phone out there at the moment but the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II are both there/thereabouts as well.

These are going to cost quite a bit more than £280 though. However, you should be able to get a Galaxy S II for around the £300 mark without much trouble and it is easily worth it over anything else around that price.

A lot of people have been getting them for that recently, I'm not sure if it's eBay or something.

There are a lot of very cheap contract deals you could take out and then pay off, there was one a few weeks ago that cost £260~ all in.

Lots of price drops around atm, the SE Arc has gone down to £199.

That's a decent all rounder and it'll get ICS in March too.

Edited with new price.
