Hi guys,

I'm looking at starting an access course in September and need to pass a level 2 English and Maths exam to qualify as I don't have any formal qualifications. I'm pretty confident in my ability to do the course, I did very well when I got moved up from a short course to a level 3 btec in software development because of my performance. But its been a very long time since I studied anything, particularly maths.

Can people point me in the right direction to pass these tests?

Times tables is essential is what I was always told. *shrug*

Basic algebra. Long division etc. Or is it all done on calculators now?

It's likely it will be Functional Skills rather than GCSE, so if you can function in basic society, ie communicate via email and letter and be able to calculate how much you've got to spend in a month you should be ok. Google 'functional skills past papers' there are loads. The questions are quite wordy but if you review the mark schemes, it will show you what's assessable and where the marks are.

I believe it's like this because they ask for GCSE's in English & Maths at uni but you still have to pass level 2 to get onto the course.

for maths, if it doesn't come naturally to you, then just practice... at that level (GCSE/A-Level) you ought to be able to score well simply by putting in the graft and banging out questions as the exams will mostly be repeat questions of the same format as you've already seen in exercises and past papers. (same can be said of first year uni and a decent portion of second year too tbh...).

For English - if it covers English Lit then buy the relevant revision guides for the text(s)... presumably you can make notes in the books too - (IIRC, though years since I didn't my GCSEs, it was worth whacking in a few essay plans on any blank space)

I'd quite like to brush up my maths as I haven't studied it for a long time. I did maths for engineering when I did my Electrical & Electronic Engineering BTEC but can't remember much of it, even less so with GCSE apart from Pythagoras/Trig and some statistics/probability. :(

Any online courses I could make use of?

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys, Maths doesn't come naturally to me and its been many years since I've had to study. I sat a mock test online last night for the AQA level 1 and just scraped a pass, but that was mostly down to forgetting stupid things like mode, median and mean etc etc and racking my brain as some of the ways I was taught to do things are outdated and didn't line up with the multiple choice answers. Ah well I've got 4 weeks to hammer it, I think I'll be okay.
