Help Please - Golf Vs Ibiza

Don't waste time on the 2.0GTI, you won't notice any difference between it and the 1.4!!

If you have to get a Golf, get a 1.8T. If you can't get the insurance on this, get the 1.6. My 1.6 gives me 35-38mpg on a 2 hour motorway journey with 18" wheels! Though, average day to day commuting gives me merely 25-29mpg.

The 1.4 and 2.0GTI are horrible engines. Running costs are fairly similar between all of them tbh, the earlier 1.4/1.6 suffered from a "chocolate Gearbox" but this was solved after 2001 (iirc) with a bolt kit and became standard.

Have you looked at anything else for the budget? Focus/Fiesta/Leon?

As said before, the Ibiza is actually comparable to the Polo, the leon is comparable to the golf.

That bad? Im just worried about the bigger running costs for her.

Yes, THAT bad.

110bhp from a 2l "GTI" ? My 1.6 makes 108bhp with a high flow exhaust and modified airbox.

I wouldn't think the running costs would be much more on a GTI tbh, there are a few on here with them so they will no doubt give you their opinion.

Should she all of a sudden get the urge for more performace, a remap takes them up to nearly 200bhp and can also give better economy ;)

I can't see her remapping! :D

But I agree, I have kept up with one no problem from the lights before and it really put it into perspective when both of us were equally embarrassed! :p

She’s quite specific with what she likes and doesn’t like, and somehow it’s boiled down to the Golf or Ibiza. No 206’s, Clio’s etc, but cheap running costs are fairly important to her. Definitely no remapping! I dont think she would understand what a remap was...despite having a masters in chem eng!

why are we even having this discussion then ? you've already said you want something local.

with a choice of only 1 town, and 2 types of car, you're going to have such a narrow choice. Just get the best example you can find.

Ibiza if that's the case, unless the car is a dog.

She just needs to choose the best car to suit her needs, and by the sounds of it, newer and lower mileage is going to be better, especially given the other similarities between the two cars.

The problem with asking a quesion like this here is that everyone thinks about what they would want, rather than what the person asking the question wants. We should be pointing out blatantly bad or stupid ideas, but neither the golf or ibiza qualify as that, given the criteria set out in your original post.

Has she considered a polo? A mk5 gti can be had for a reasonable amount of money and cant see them being as expensive to run as the 1.8t.

I really like my 1.8T GTI, but to throw in another opinion, my sister is insured on it and drives it - she absolutely loves it. As long as your gf doesn't develop a case of lead foot and doesn't keep it in too low a gear while going around town, it won't be that bad on petrol. I keep the trip computer on the MPG setting to make myself drive more sensibly ;)

Seeing what it's got is fun but yeah, it can obviously drink fuel if you boot it.

Becuase it carries a premium for the sort of car it is, and the sort of car it is affords here no benefit whatsoever.

Plus it will be ancient.

Out of interest Fox, how come you're not anti-high-mileage but you have a thing for cars over 5 years old being "ancient" ?

I dont have a thing for cars over 5 years old being ancient at all - my car is 6 years old now, although I don't buy cars more than 5 years old myself.

I just think spending large amounts of money on a Golf several years older than anything else for the money, including a lower spec Golf, when the benefits such a car provides are irrelevent to the person buying the car, is daft.

As for age v mileage I'd rather a newer car than a lower mileage car when faced with two cars for the same money. I personally think time is harsher than use.

How very bizarre... faced with a 10 year old car garaged for it's entire life and used infrequently vs. a 120,000 mile 3 year old car that's been through all weathers, you'd opt for the latter?

How is that bizarre? I can't think of any cars which be utterly unchanged throughout a 10 year production run that I'd like to buy.

In the context of Golfs you've basically said its bizarre that I would pick a 120k mile Golf Mk5 2.0 TDI GT on an 05 plate over a mint, garaged 1998 R plate Mk3 Golf 2.0d.

I think its fairly obvious to see why you'd pick the newer car!
