Help please

Son just bought the components for his new computer, just finished putting it together, switch on, fans turn, no graphics, no sound from motherboard (beeps)
checked everything again, memory reseated, graphic card reseated, checked all the connections and all seems ok. Anyone got any further suggestions ?
spec is AMD piledriver, gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 motherboard and 8 gig mem,600w corsair power supply.
 
It's plugged in have taken it out and rechecked it can'y see a problem with it. What Im worried about it wont even put up any graphics, do's not put up the bios screen, just a black screen, we know the card is ok, just came out of his old computer.
 
Right, I am the son in question.

From what I can see everything is plugged in properly including the chassis fans, switches etc. PSU is connected to Mobo using 12v ATX and the large ATX cable. 1x 5770 graphics card is in one PCI-E slot, connected to PSU. CPU is Piledriver 8320, stock cooler connected to CPU_FAN on top left of Mobo. Have tried combination of none, 1 and both sticks of RAM. Only peripheral connected is 1x SSD.

I press the the power button (THERE IS NO BEEP AT ALL); all fans working correctly inc case fans, graphics card fan, CPU fan. The fans are in a continuous loop of about 3 seconds of low to high activity. No activity from monitor. Hard drive is working but not thinking. I have reset the CMOS by removing the battery for 2 minutes.

Try the CLR CMOS header which is located above the Front Panel header, sometimes you need to wait a lot longer with the battery removed and power off.
 
Ok I've just dismantled the whole thing and starting from scratch.

Thing I'm concerned about is there being no beep at all from the motherboard.

If the CMOS needed resetting (brand new mobo) would there be a beep or not?
 
Have you connected the case speaker to the front panel header on the motherboard?

If you have then you should here the post beep or least a error code.
 
As you have no onboard graphics, have you tried the 5770 in another Pcie slot. Also how is it connected to the monitor.
 
GOT THE F'ING THING WORKING

Did a complete reassembly. Everything was in the same place it was before, I can't see why changing the order it went in would make a difference.

The graphics card is in a different PCI-E slot - I did try this before, but who knows.

Originally started up with jsut the one SSD connected. On adding the other hard drives I got an "NTLDR is missing error". Disconnecting then reconnecting the SATA one by one after each reboot cables seemed to fix this. Everything is working apart from my Network adapter; no idea. Drivers for it are installed. Will figure that out.

Things I learned:

1. Next time get a huge case. Its a complete pain in the a** trying to fit everything in. I got everything working just to find I had to unplug it all and remove the PSU just so I could fit the hard drives in.

2. Don't bother with a modular PSU. The whole premise is redundant when you have a graphics card and more than one hard drive. You need all the cables anyway.

3. Don't even try and comprehend how people get perfect looking PC interiors. Got cables everywhere even using cableties and the case cable management.

4. Computers are a**holes. They will ruin your day if they want to. Took me about 10 hours to get this thing going.

5. Other things I'm sure. It gave me back ache too.


Thanks for the replies. It wasn't the CMOS or CPU/ATX/PSU connectors. I still don't know what was causing the problem. I just hope it doesn't resurface!

That's the beauty of computers :D

By angering you and wasting 10 hours of your life, you now have a great satisfaction and enjoying knowing that you've solve the bloody thing.

Sorry, thought any disallowed words were automatically star'ed out. Got the internet adapter working despite the notification saying that I am both connected and that it cannot find a network. That's a new one.

The sound I'm having a bit of difficulty with but getting there.

Will put up some pics either here or in the "things we got in April" thread at some point

Edit: actually I think the headphone socket might be faulty. The jack either has to be either 3 fifths of the way or completely jammed in the socket to get anything other than tinny sound. The noise keeps breaking up and if the jack moves or is rotated in the socket it disappears or goes crackly...

Right the front audio jack seems to be buggered. I can put the headphones into the microphone slot and reassign it to audio out. The problem is the same, has to be in exactly one position not completely in, a little out, or the audio doesn't work or is very tinny.

The sound from the motherboard round the back is great and I'm back to using what I was on my old PC, a 1 to 2 audio splitter so I can use my headphones.

If you see here the Mic slot has a bit of metal which I presume is the contact. This is missing on the Headphone slot. Is this normal is is this causing the lack of audio? I really don't want to have to spend another 3 hours getting a new case and redoing this whole thing :(
