Hi guys I have a quick question. Is there a way for me to get the movies on my PC over to watch on the tv downstairs, without the need of converting them to disks or wireless? This is probably a really daft question, but myself and my wife where speaking about this last night and we really don't have a clue hehe.

If there is a method that works? could someone please link me to the needed parts on OCUK or maybe just a little information.
If wireless would be a better option, what do I need to buy? I don't have a console as I have heard some people stream from, and I don't have anything in my system that would help with that either. What would be my best move at this time? Not really too bothered how much I would need to spend to sort this out, just curious as to what options are available for us.

Thanks for the advice guys. :D:confused:

Simplest way, Play mkv, avi off a USB stick with a

Sumvision Cyclone Micro 3 Media Player
or
IncrediSonic Ultra Play IMP150

if your tv supports a wifi dongle then you can stream movies to your tv from pc using tversity

I used to stick em on usb sticks it took ages, streaming is instant

if money is no option then get a small htpc to stream from the pc? I dont see why you wouldnt want to go for roku, chromecast or streaming equivalent unless you want to move the pc downstairs.

If these are the only options I will keep looking guys, thought there would be something else. Chromecast for example isn't doing the job I need. Wifi I will try to avoid as much as possible.

How would you expect to get the file from the PC to the TV if not by wireless? Do you have a cabled ethernet connection between the PC and TV?

What I am looking for is sometype of box where I can move my files onto and then plug it into my TV downstairs to watch. My TV has no USB port. I know there is something out there, someone I used to work with had something which did just this but we have lost touch now, he has moved away. Chromecast I checked a few vids and isn't quite the same.

How about a USB to HDMI converter/adapter, and an external USB hard drive?

Although the external hard drive would probably not function as it should without being plugged into a PC. Nevermind.

Sounds like you need a media player with built in hard drive... but you would have to move such a device back and forth between your pc and TV ever time you wanted to add new movies..
Really though the simplest and quickest option is to use wifi and streaming... whats the big issue with it???

If you dont want to stream from the source (chromcast etc) then something like the WDTVlive Hub will do it (media streamer with a 1tb drive).

If you have a Samsung Smart TV you could set up plex server on your PC and use the Plex app on the Smart TV app store to stream the movies over to your TV.

This is what I use anyways.

Or get a BD player that has a usb port and large usb stick, this is what i use 64gb usb stick fill it with movies every so often then soon as i switch it on gives me choice of playing from usb or disc.

Well tbh I suppose there is no issue as such, I am just so clueless with it all when it comes to streaming. I think I was talking about a media player with built in hd like UKDTweak says :), but now I see that's the wrong option.
Seriously i know a fair bit about pc's, and build them quite often. But when it comes to wireless and streaming, its not really something I have bothered looking into or understand.
The TV downstairs is just a 42inch LG 42LH3000, and there is not USB port on it for some reason.
Alcopup mentioned WDTVlive Hub, and looking at that it does look interesting. If I was too buy something like that, would that give me everything I need?
God im thick !

Before i got my smart tv, I bought a 3tb NAS and a WDTV Live SMP (media player).
The WDTV connects to my network via lan or wifi and this in turn allows it to see the NAS which the PC also sees via LAN, I then copy films to the NAS and the WDTV picks them up and streams them to the TV over HDMI, simple, no expertise required.
You can also plug a USB stick or 2.5" HDD straight into the WDTV :)

There are plenty of streamer options - the live hub is one - if it was me I'd get the standalone wdtv live (the latest generation - I think it is called the wdtvlive streaming - lots of shops have the older gen so choose carefully) and then a standalone hard drive - that way you can leave the wdtv live pluged in and only move the hard drive to your source - also if the HD fails you can simply replace that bit instead of the whole unit.
Both the live hub and the live will also let you watch bbci player and youtube etc .
