I bought a motherboard and CPU from overclockers a couple a days ago and a PSU elsewhere. But whenever I plug the PSU in, there is a constant clicking sound and the comp does not power on.

This is my first ever build so maybe i've done something.

Anyone got any ideas?

What PSU is it? Does anything happen when you plug the PSU in other than the clicking sound e.g. any lights, fans spinning etc? Have you got all necessary cables connected?

The words "Extra Value" there send chills down my spine, I'm guessing then it was relatively inexpensive? But no matter, going on the information given I suspect that the PSU is DOA, however if you have a spare kettle lead then you might want to try that first just in case.

The CPU is a Q6600 and I remember reading that 500w was adequate enough.

To use the old truism, not all PSUs are created equal. A good 500w PSU is easily enough for almost any system short of those with multiple graphics cards but a cheap 500w might only be capable of supplying 300w continuously and cleanly. I don't know anything about that PSU so it might be better than I suspect but PSUs aren't really a good area to skimp on.

//edit having read your edit I think you might have to return the PSU for a replacement, the other thing to do before you do is to check that it is switched on at the back as some have a little rocker switch and that might be off if it is there, also make sure that it is set to 240v if it accepts dual voltage.

Exactly as Semi says. Its not worth it.

You have to remember that the PSU is the backbone of the system, it provides power to all those quality components that make up your build. If you invest in a no-frills £20 piece of junk (thats what they are) then you are going to encounter problems. I have been there myself and many others (Semi included probably!) on here have also. Its not worth it in the long run, invest in a quality PSU.

I would recommend 450-500W, this allows a moderate overclock and comfortable room for other components Anything from Antec, Akasa, FSP and Corsair. They are affordable!

A constand clicking sound? Hope thats not the hard drive click of death. Try another power supply if you can.
