Hi there,

basically my dad gave me and old seagate drive 550bm (seagate st3660A) which has some old accounts data that needs to be retrieved. now i think the operating system that is installed on this hard drive is win3.1. Anyway i opened up my pc (winxp system) and unplugged all my hard drives apart my bootup sata drive and plugged the seagate into an ide slot. i looked on the seagate drive and it said to leave the jumpers all free if its "Master and slave is ata compliant or standalone and no slave."

Turned on my pc and went into bios. the bios detected both my sata (as it always) and the new "old" seagate ata drive. so thinking all was well i exitted bios and expected to boot up into windows xp and access the old drive. all i get is after the boot screen a flash of the winxp and the flashing blue lights and then a quick bsod and a reset back to the post screen.

anyone know whats going on?

the other options if it helps for the jumpers are

"master slave is not ata compliant"

"slave (d:)"

"master but slave uses pdiag signal instead of dasp- to indicate slave is present"

"master and slave cable select - refer to manual"

please can someone help cos the data needs to recover. i know the drive is good cos the bios can see it, i guess its just windows not liking it. i will try every combination of jumper setting to get it to work in a minute.

muhahaha hows this for ingenuity, searched thru my box of tricks and found and ata to sata adaptor... connected it to this aging hard drive switched on, prayed booted into winxp and it detected this old old hard drive that was once in an old old machine :)
