Help! Revs dropping and shuddering ? Vid now included

Hi Motors.
Can someone shed some light on what might be causing a problem that has happened a few times in the last couple of weeks?
Car is 93 civic vti and a few times recently when cruising/very light acceleration in 4th gear, the rev counter blips down about 1k rpm and the car shudders almost like its not getting fuel or someone is jabbing the brake pedal real quick. Not noticed it in any other gear or under hard acceleration and its starting to worry me a bit now...

I agree with poker 999 - MAF or fuel filter.
Also I had the same symptoms with one of my old cars, it wouldn't hold idle and stall without revs. It turned out to be throttle bodies.
All 3 options are <£100 fix I'd think.

Ok well its getting lowered soon so ill get it serviced and see if that cures it but there's no problem with the idle or it stalling, it literally has only been cursing along and only noticed it in forth gear. If the service doesn't help then I guess it will have to have further investigation.
Cheers guys

A MAF can be cleaned before attempting replacement. A quick way to tell if it is the MAF is to remove it and see if the car runs any better, if it does, it's the MAF.

Check out ericthecarguy videos on YouTube. He covers almost every common 90s Honda fault. He's a good watch

clean the iacv

I had similar issues when a camshaft sensor died on my old Cavalier. It sounds like its sensor related anyway... Are '93 cars new enough to have fault codes?!

Civic Vtis don't have a MAF sensor or a camshaft sensor. The coilpacks, specifically the ignition amplifiers, are a common failure point on the B series engine. I'd be inclined to check for obvious problems first though, such as degraded plug leads and plugs, earth condition and so on.

Well it happened on the way to work this morning and cut out completely twice!
But then didn't do it at all on way home?
Below is a video of it happening. When I turn the wheel at the very start you can just see the rpms dip then they drop off completely so I took it out of gear and revved it and managed to save it, the rest is self explanatory. And sorry for the poor video.

Definitely something ignition coil-related - this is confirmed by the immediate drop of the rev counter needle.

I'm surprised you haven't been ripped a new ******* by the OcUK Forum 'Polis' for videoing whilst driving..........

Somebody posted about this kind of issue on an 8th Gen t'other day on CivInfo... Turned out to be an overfill on the AC

Who'da thunk it ?

Had a very similar problem with my DC2 recently

Replaced the distributor cap and the rotor arm in the distributor and it 100% fixed the problem.

Car felt like it wasn't getting fuel and even cut out a few times.

Worth getting genuine parts for the distributor
