Hi guys,

I'm having trouble installing Windows 10 onto my new m.2 drive on my pc. Its probably something really simple that I'm overlooking hence needing help.
So the mb I'm trying to install it on is an B450 Aorus Elite with AMD chipset. BIOS detects the drive is there, but when I boot up and try installing Windows 10 from USB flash onto the drive, it doesn't detect the drive. Ive tried several different drivers, but to no avail.
What I have tried so far:
Swapping ports
Installing Samsung drivers
Updating chipset driver
Flashed BIOS (Now at F52)
Removing both already installed SSD and HDD
Changing BIOS settings to disable CSM and clear keys
Changing CSM to legacy

Cheers in advance for any help given.
Adam

Legacy CSM isn't necessary, best to leave that disabled and keep UEFI on. I recently bought the same SSD to use on my Maximus Hero XI (Intel Z390) and I just slotted it in, made sure it shows in the BIOS then migrated my install.

How many SATA drives do you normally have in the machine and are you using the SATA or ASATA slots? ASATA slots (by the RAM slots) share PCI lanes with the M.2 slots, so avoid using those. Which M.2 slot are you using? You should use Slot A ("M2A_SOCKET") for PCI-e NVMe format SSDs, not the one labelled M2B.

Reason I ask about other SATA devices is because M.2 bandwidth is shared with the SATAs, you can't use ASATA3,1 and ASATA3,2 when you have a PCIe SSD installed (Page 17 on https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_b450-aorus-elite_1002_e.pdf) - "Due to the limited number of lanes provided by the Chipset, the availability of the SATA connectors may be affected by the type of device installed in the M.2 connector. Refer to the following table for details."

Thanks for your reply.
I have 2 SATA drives in the machine, and they were in the same lane, so I moved them inline with the m2b slot. Boot up, can see the drive in device manager. Says it's working fine, but I cannot see it in disk manager or diskpart. Only the 2 other drives I'm running are showing.

Are you using ASATA ports or the black SATA ports?

Do all the drives show during POST? (you may have to disable the splash screen and lengthen the boot delay to see this)

Granted we don't have the same motherboard, but I have two spinny discs, a PCI-E SSD and my 970 Evo+ in M.2 slot 1. The new M.2 just... showed up, albeit uninitialized, and I used Macrium Reflect Free to clone the PCIe SSD to the M.2. Of course Windows has to see the device.

Any alerting devices in Device Manager, or hidden devices? Rare chance that chipset drivers may need updating or fixing? (use the show_nonpresent_devices command prompt trick then toggle display hidden devices to be 100% sure)

ASATA ports are being used.

It does show the drives during POST.

No alerting devices nor any hidden ones, but I haven't tried the display hidden devices trick yet to see. My chipset is fully upto date and seems to be working totally fine

If you have two SATA drives plugged into ASATA3,0 and ASATA3,1 (by the RAM and ATX connector), you will need to replug those to the two black SATA connectors in the bottom-left corner by the front panel pins. You can't use M2A_SOCKET and the ASATA3 0/1 connectors simultaneously.

It's recommended to use the M2A socket for best throughput (PCIe 3.0 x4). M2B only supports PCIe M.2 SSDs at PCIe 3.0 x2 and shares with "SATA3 2" and "SATA3 3".

There is also a slim chance the SSD or the motherboard is defective... Where did you purchase from, how old are both? Was the SSD's box definitely OEM sticker sealed closed when you received it?

I'd also try downloading a Linux Mint or GParted LiveUSB, flash that to a spare USB stick and boot into Linux to rule out Windows. I'd also contemplate buying a compatible USB3 M.2 adapter to see if the drive works properly in Windows independent of the mobo.

Just had a thought - are you using hardware SATA or UEFI RAID? There's pages in the manual about both mobo RAID modes. You'd need to initialise the SSD as a disk then assign its logical volume for Windows to know what to do with it.

Unfortunately I've tried all the above and to no avail.

My money now is on the m.2 being faulty. Bought it through Overclockers, who are now helping me with a 'swap' as the drive is under warranty.

I appreciate all your help ~cw. Cheers mate.

Dang, that's frustrating if so. Did BIOS and POST show the correct model name and capacity or just the device name?

Please let me know how you get on, I hate unresolved mysteries :)

Yes mate, shows up as it should in BIOS and shows up as it's working fine on device manager.

Once they've tested it, fingers crossed it's just a faulty drive. I'll keep you posted :)
