Decided to upgrade my XP2600 with a new XP3200 CPU and its causing a few problems. The mb is a DFI Infinity NF2 Ultra (rev.A) and mem is 1GB PC3200 DDR.

Took all the normal precautions and replaced the CPU, powered up and nothing, not even a green monitor led, the only activity is from the HD's spinning up! Checked all cards and leads and the PSU's o/p's and all ok. So replaced the old XP2600 CPU and the same nothing.. I dont know the bios rev as I cant power it up, sos cant contact DFI either! From waht I understood the mb should auto detect the new CPU and there were no jumpers to change. Do I need to change anything in the bios for the new CPU? Strange thing is the old XP2600 CPU doesnt work anymore.. Also do I need a new h/sink - currently using a thermoengine and probably wont be overclocking....

Any suggestions greatfully received!!

HELP??

There is only the one beep as normal at switch on and I dont think there are any led codes on this mb..

The FSB select jumper only has two settings (from what I can see), as it is now ("other cpu's") and 100MHz?? Still doesnt explain why the old cpu doesnt work??? Maybe the bios has been affected by trying to boot with the xp3200??

HELP#####

 Cleared the cmos and still no post - same problem, just the normal single beep.

Anyway this is with the xp2600 as it originally was, which has been fine for the last few yrs.. checked all the psu o/p's again and all seems ok. PSU is a 300W do you need more for a xp3200?

Anymore ideas, getting desperate now....

 Just out of interest I've got the cpu code for the new XP3200, does this seem OK?

HELP ##

How do i flash to the latest bios if I cant get it to post, not even with the old xp2600??

Wondered what your thoughts might be on why the xp2600 wont boot anymore... seems a very subtle psu fault if all the rails read ok.. and could a cpu (if faulty) damage the mb?? I still cant believe that the cpu or psu could be damaged by a cpu, at least something that wouldnt return after the faulty cpu was replaced....

Just one long beep as before I think... But the mem is as before, why should this stop the old xp2600 working???

More Help ###

So still no luck... tried the fast ram in another mb (different slower cpu - first athlon derivative, before xp) which worked fine. Then tried the agp graphics card from the slower pc in the problem pc and still no post!

The beep is one small beep, which is normal I think as before. 'Precautions' are an anti static wristband. Tried reseating memory/cpu/graphics card...

So my conclusion is dead mb or two dead cpu's, but how it happened who knows??

Any last ditch ideas? Can I get the board checked repaired somewhere?

Cheers

Help ###

No didnt discharge the psu and havent done so before...

Can that normally be a problem and how do you do it? So you think this might have damaged the mb and/or both cpu's?

Also do you know if you can still buy these mb's from anywhere?
(DFI NF11 UNTRA INFINITY) as I want to use my SATA h/d's as they are...

help ####

Definitely didnt get the jumpers mixed up, but I did only leave the jumper in the discharge position for 10/15sec.. I did remove the battery after that to check its voltage, but again for only 30sec or so...

Once a cmos is cleared though do I really need to do a bios flash? Shouldnt the pc now post and then before it hangs, you enter the bios (press del normally) and install defaults...? It should then boot normally and it can be flashed at will...

Maybe I've got this wrong...

help ####

So it looks like I have a corrupted bios.. Do I still need to reflash it before it will post? ie. by buying a new bios chip..?

If I leave the jumper on and the battery out for a longer time, clear the cmos, so whether corrupted or not it will be cleared... this should allow it to post and I can load default settings?

One other ques.. if you disconnect the mains lead from the psu and switch on the pc, as its a pc (front mounted) switch and not a direct switch on the rear of the psu will it make any difference?

Monitor is definitely ok.. using with another pc.

Thanks again for all the advice...

HELP again ###

So still no luck.. I discharged the main psu and left the bios discharge jumper in place for two days with the battery removed and still no post.. Also I never attempted to start the pc with the jumper in discharge position..

Can someone tell me is the bios stored in the cmos memory, that is powered by the battery? People have mentioned 'flashing' the bios... CMOS memory is volatile ie. needs power, flash does not.. so removing the battery and discharging will clear it. I assume the socketed 32pin device is the cmos device? Unless it is a split CMOS/Flash part, once the CMOS is powered down it is cleared. Shouldnt the mb boot with with no bios and wait for a default one to be loaded..?

Any last ideas... and why would a new CMOS device help... unless it also has some flash?? Confused and frustrated....

help ###

Ok that sounds more like it... the bios is stored in flash not CMOS ram and the battery is only there for the clk. So why in the manual is the jumper called
'CMOS data clear' is this just for the clk?

I meant with flash it does not need any power to keep its contents when the pc is off? So once the bios flash is corrupted the only way is a new flash device...

I'll see if I can get a new chip from DFI street..

help ###

If I could get hold of another skt a bios chip, can it be from any mb, or must it be same type/model.. and If I do I take it I can post with the replacement chip and then carefully remove it once the pc has booted, replace the old one and then flash it with the latest bios...
