So I finished my build, and was running my first test boot. Slightly panicked due to nothing on the screen at first, had to connect HDMI cable as well as DisplayPort (was the same with my old monitor, never did figure it out).

Then this message:

‘New CPU installed. fTPM/PSP NV corrupted or fTPM/PSP NV structure changed.

Press Y to reset fTPM, if you have a BitLocker or encryption enabled, the system will not boot without a recovery key

Press N to keep previous fTPM record and continue system boot, fTPM will NOT enable in new CPU, you can swap back to the old CPU to recover TPM related keys and data.’

Literally none of this means anything to me. What is fTPM and does it matter if I don’t have it? Every component I have used is brand new, so there is no ‘old’ CPU to switch back to.

Hmmm. Asus site says this is normal. Doesn’t look very bloody normal to me and they should rephrase the message, but apparently it’s because the FTPM update ‘comes from the CPU’ and may change when a different one is used. So I should use the Y option.

If you have a new system this message is something you can safely ignore.

But, as the msg suggests, if you don't have a new system you can lose access to the operating system in some circumstances.

Yeah you will see it again in future
If you were to upgrade your current cpu
Can't remember if motherboard change and even
Some bios updates trigger it too
Ftpm is the CPU's tpm
Very few motherboard have an actual tpm module
Though some motherboards do have the actual socket
To take a tpm module
So for most people the cpus ftpm capabilities are used

When windows 11 was first
On the verge of being released it actually caused scalping
On tpm modules
Buying cheap and selling expensive basically
As people thought an actual tpm module would be required
Obviously it turned out cpus would be capable instead

Unless you have bitlocker enabled on any of your drives then it doesnt matter if you select yes or no for that option.

If you did enable bitlocker all you need to do is visit Microsoft on any other device and access your account to get an unlock key, it will ask you to input this key during first boot and then never ask you again unless you change CPU again.
