is there any software out there that can get into my drive and image or extract the files? even tho i cant get into the drive on my computer?
OS is windows XP pro.
thanks for any help guys, i dont really want to reformat
i will be so thankful if this can be sorted,
thanks guys, your awesome

If the drive isn't knackered I would install Windows onto another HD, and see if you can access the data on the other drive after it's finished the install and booted up.

drive is not knackard, as i got windows on one partition and my documents on the other, its my doucments thats failed, i will go out and buy another hard drive later on today then, thanks

There are other ways of recovering data however if you don't know what you're doing it's best having a seperate drive with a fresh install, leaving your other drive alone until you're sure about it.

When fitting the new drive, disconnect your other drive power cable. So when you do the install there is no way you can accidentally install onto the drive with your data. After it boots up on the fresh install, shut down. Connect power to the other drive, switch it back on. Check BIOS is booting from the new drive, and you should see the other drive as two letter designations within Widnows Explorer. If not then perhaps the partition is corrupted.

thanks for the info mate, i did pull the drive out and put it as a slave in a second rig i had, and then nothing, so i give up, put it back into this one now and when i started it up checkdisk started to scan my disk, then next thing you know it fixed it!

im happy :P
thanks badboi
(im now gonna go get another hard drive and mirror my drives!)

If checkdisk doesn't work ever for any reason try spinrite its a bootable disk that can recover data and bad sectors. it takes a long time to run at its highest settings but can be very usefull.
