First time I've ever had probs with windows. Windows hung and I cannot get it to start again. I've tried with the windows recovery option but it's hung at the "windows is loading files" ... (unless this takes a long time). I've got the windows dvd in the dvd drive but then cannot selct to boot from this as I cannot get the keyboard to work in the selection window (it works in the bios though). Any hints ??

Could you elaborate a bit more when you say,
"I've got the windows dvd in the dvd drive but then cannot selct to boot from this as I cannot get the keyboard to work in the selection window (it works in the bios though)".

I'm slightly confused; if you can get to the 'loading files' bit, then surely it can boot from the disc?

the keyboard works fine when in bios but as soon as it goes into choosing what to boot from and "press enter to accept" the keyboard will not function nor will the mouse (power goes off on both). Therefor I can't select what to boot from or how to boot ...

Hmm, that's strange. Have you tried installing windows from a USB drive? It might make a difference, but I've never came across the problem you're experiencing myself.

Just run the repair mode from the CD that you installed it from you don't need to mess about with USB. Just set the BIOS to boot from CD/DVD drive first. I would try a PS2 keyboard or if you have the USB keyboard and the USB to PS2 converter if your motherboard has a PS2 keyboard input. Also if you can get into the BIOS make sure USB 2.0 is set to allow Legacy devices too and same if there is an option for USB 3.0, then try the keyboard and mouse again. If that all fails try clearing the BIOS to factory settings and see if things change. If it still is behaving strange go into the BIOS and set the OS drive to disabled or just unplug the drive and try to boot of the CD and see if the keyboard is working again if not there is somthing very strange happening and I would look for a BIOS update for that motherboard.

You need to have a USB drive big enough and a Windows 7 image. Then use this tool to make the USB drive bootable, and mount the image to the USB drive:

Then you just put the USB drive in your computer, boot and then install windows like you would with a disc.
