£500 to see a dog after hours?! Are you serious? Our local vet charged me £120 recently when my bitch had eclampsia after having her pups. That was the grand total for:

A 3am callout charge.
1 hour of his time attending to the bitch, monitoring her etc.
3 sets of four different drugs over 60 mins.
1 week's supply of medicine.

And yours wants £500 just to SEE him? LOL As above, get ringing around and/or speak to the PDSA. Remind any vet like the first ones you rang about the oath they took when they graduated and gained entry to the Royal College.

If my vet wanted £500 for my 12 year old dog, the poor old sod would be taking a one way walk into the woods with me, and a 12 gauge. Good luck.

I highly doubt it is £500 call out fee.

Sad thing is I wouldn't be suprised if it was. You need the vet if your pet is in pain and suffering, so people panic and look at the first option available to them, don't consider the cost at the time and don't look elsewhere as they feel pressured to get their pet seen to quickly.

Horrible business practice but it likely works.

* Call your local humane society or animal shelter - they may offer reduced cost veterinary care or vouchers to use at your local veterinarian.
* Ask your veterinarian if there are any options for trading work or services that you are able to offer.
* Various animal aid organizations like IMOM offer assistance to those in need. Check out local resources in your community -- your veterinarian may be able to offer advice on local resources, too.
* Veterinary schools will sometimes take on unique cases as a learning tool.
* Start a savings plan. This doesn't have to be a huge amount, but some money tucked away "just in case" can be a good emergency buffer. It is easy to look at our pets and assume they are always going to be healthy and vibrant, but things can change quickly sometimes, and having some financial plan will be better than being caught by surprise.
* Last but not least, check with friends and family for a possible short term loan in the event of a life-threatening emergency.

Seriously it will cost you nothing to put it down yourself, and it will save the creature the agony.

Why pay a vet for what you can do now?

I don't think putting it down is quite that easy... unless you happen to own a 12 guage... or do you propose he starts whacking at it with a shovel?

If the answer is anything to do with money the OP deserves a punch in the ovaries

Like I said last night...WE DONT HAVE £500!!!!!!!!!! SO HOW CAN SHE TAKE THE DOG WHEN THEY ARE REFUSING TO DO IT WITHOUT THE MONEY???!! It's pointless,we've tried and they aren't budging!! He's even barred from his normal vets as he is so vicious, so we're going to have to persuade them to see him tomorrow, they have no choice.

Wayne, sorry to say it mate but you should think long and hard here. You have a 12 year old large breed dog, with numerable health conditions, currently in distress with no access to a vet, and a bad temperament... In your shoes I'd be taking him for a one way walk into the woods.

I hope you find a good resolution no matter what you decide. Good luck.

Just put a muzzle on him if he is aggressive in the vets!

Hmm, maybe you could do that but we certainly couldnt, sorry.

He will be at the vets 1st thing in the morning. He seems a lot better than last night, he's walking a lot and eating and drinking as normal, going outside etc but he's still not well, we know what is going to happen and its definitely for the best.

Thanks

Have you even looked at the options which other people are suggesting ?

Well most people are suggesting we kill him ourselves, so no...not really.

Some people have been helpful but no matter who we ring, they all tell us to go back to our out of hours vets who are Vets Now who are going to charge £500 at the time off seeing him which we just dont have, I wish we did!
