Help with a diagnostic - Blue Screen streaming machine

Hey guys,

A strange blue screen has occurred on my gf's PC and wanted to see if anyone has had something similar or advice. The error is 0x0000124 which I know is a hardware issue. OBS (open broadcasting software) hits CPU usage around 80 - 90% upon encoding at 1080p 60fps, which I feel is too high for the CPU.

The system is used for Streaming on Twitch, and the blue screen only appears to occur when streaming games.

System specs:

- Asus Z97-AR mobo (NOW updated to MSI Z97 Gaming 5)
- Intel 4790K CPU
- 16gb hyperX fury 1866 (Now HyperX Savage 16GB)
- NVIDIA GTX 980

I have run the following tests

- Intel burn test (high for 10 cycles)
- Memtest (only for one pass however)
- Furmark / 3DMark and GPU is fine

Can anyone share anything which you feel would help the situation?

**Updated**

We got a new motherboard/memory to eliminate that it could be potential hardware failure from either of these.. still got a 124 error. Currently got one stick of 8GB running 1600MHz 1.5v.
Previous motherboard couldn't boot with a single ram module, this one can however.

As process of elimination, it could be either PSU, CPU (CPU checked with burntest + prime, was fine) or HDDs' which I'm pretty sure it isn't (but have to consider)

Have you tried running whocrashed, might give you a better indication.
What sort of temps were you getting when it crashed?

most likely not enough memory controller voltage if running 16gb

I would look into raising that first

good test for memory is prime95 blend test, workers will fail pretty quickly

Yep, a boost on the following may help with 16gb, SA, IOA and IOD. I need 1.200 on each of theese even just with 8gb of ram. Probably down to the cpu being clocked.

Not got whocrashed running - so we'll get that to see if it helps. Thanks for the recommendation

System at stock or overclocked? 0x124 can be either lack of vcore, or chipset voltages.

No overclock on it, currently stock.

I'll run a proper prime95 test, I did one briefly but didn't know the right settings tbh, so i'll have another look.

If stock then id say it is a good chance that it is the chipset voltages and the 16gb of ram. Try bumping them up a touch, 1.15 ono would be a good starting point.

Hmmm did you updated OBS to latest version 0.638 Beta?

If you used latest version then it probably buggy, you could try alternative broadcast software like XSplit Broadcaster.

It's on the Beta, but happened before the latest version too - She needs to use OBS as this is where all settings are currently configured and Xsplit is even more CPU intensive.

I suspect as per setter said its due to not enough IMC/VTT voltage for the amount of RAM - I need 1.15v on mine to get 16GB 100% stable - be cautious of going over 1.2v unless you know the safe limits for your particular chipset.

124 is an annoying one as there are cases where the cause of it isn't very intuitive due to the complex relationship between IMC, VTT (sometimes known as SA or VCSSA, etc.) and the vcore. Most of the time it isn't a problem but sometimes it can be caused when the system is under stress and the range between 1 of them to one of the others is too close or too far - as much as possible within safe limits the easiest thing to do is match IMC and VTT and make sure that the gap between them and the vcore doesn't exceed ~300mv (not sure how valid this is with more recent CPU revisions/chipsets).

On my board im using fully manual mode for most voltages, (not too familiair with offset tbh). But below is a shot of my SA, IOA/D. All in yellow which is well within limits. Any lower and i get a myriad of errors.

Have you also checked in Event Viewer. Under systems look for the last error, then scroll down to you find a critical, this will give you the Event ID and may help pin point the problem.

Thanks, i'll check that out also after she has done streaming :)

If you didn't want to mess with voltages, you can simply pull 8gb of memory and just test with 8gb installed, then see if its still bsod's

I was getting the blue screen error and the same sort of code about 4 months ago, what I did was update the graphics card and it suddenly stopped.

Might be worth a try.

Graphics drivers have been updated also. This BSOD code is just too generic haha

Ok, When I was getting the blue screen some times it would be twice a day then other times it would not happen for a week or two.

But then it seemed to fixs its self some how and I've never had it since. :)
