Hey, so my uni mate owes me 400 quid, we have a joint account that our rent and bills come out of and we put £1000 in every couple of months, we are due to put in our £1000 each, but as he owes me £400 can I just put in £600? excuse my stupidity but does that work out even? because that would be the same as taking 400 out of the joint account which is made up of both our money so surly im taking 200 of his money and 200 of my own?

Cheers

If you can't get him to figure this out just get him to give you £400 and just put in the joint account yourself as part of your share.

Also tell him to prepare for unemployment.

As above, either he needs to put in £1400 or you need to put in £200 and gamble that the £1200 total will cover both of your needs.

As everyone has said. Unless he puts in £1400 the account would be £400 short.

Ideally I would say for you all to just pay in your £1000 like normal and have him pay you the £400 in a separate transaction. Makes it easier if you end up looking back at your records at a later date.

Where do Uni Students get an income of £1000.oo a month - that should be the first question. :-)

I agree but for some reason he wont just send me the 400, there wont be any issues with the account going into debt as the 2000quid total we put in more than covers our bills, but I just wanted to be sure that if I only put 600 in and he does 1000 then we are both even.

im just struggling to get my head round it cos, he owes me 400 not the joint account and since we both have an equal amount of our money in there does that all add up

I would put the money in and get him to give you the 400 it looks better on paper.

Thats fine. Its the same as you both putting £1000 as usual after he has paid you back the £400 he owes you.

He gives you £400 and puts £1000 in = £1000 paid
You put in £600 + £400 from him = £1000 paid

He has "spent" £1400, you have "spent" £600

For me?

4,891.00 Loan + 118.00 Grant
200 a month working evenings
300 a month working weekends
68 a month from prison service pension
330 a year uni bursary
1000 working uni open days + IT support in the easter holidays
Summer internship/Job - 1000-2000

I literally don't understand the 'poor student' stereotype. Go out there and work. I still have 3 nights a week and one weekend day completely free, at least, every week.

It doesn't really. The money in the joint account is still your money just in a different place.

Lets say you both start with £1000 individually, and you (X) give friend Y £400.

So X has £600 and Y has £1400

To get back to equilibrium X would have to have £1000 and Y would have to have £1000

So you pay your £600 into the account (A) and Y pays his £1000 into the account
Now
X £0
Y £400
A £1600

Then suddenly all your bills disappear and you close the account and take the money back out.

If you split it in half you end up with
X £800
Y £1200
A £0

So he still owes you £200

Alternatively the bills come to £800 so now you have
X £0
Y £400
A £800

Then you split the £800 between you
X £400
Y £800
He still owes you £200

As said it's easier just to do it separately, or have him pay your missing £400 directly into the account and think of it like a transfer in escrow

You are struggling because he is talking crap.

Either he is trying to scam you or he is genuinely thick.

He owes you this money and he needs to put £1,000 into the joint account. If you choose to put the £400 owed into the joint account for the bills that it your choice to do so.

The £400 needs to be in your hands as it is your money to do with what you please.

Just out of interest, what are you doing at uni? Please tell me it's nothing to do with adding things up that could affect someones life (ie how many tablets should I give my patient?) ;)
