Help with assetto corsa in VR

Hi all

I cant get Assetto Corsa working in VR.

Im using a quest connected via Virtual Desktop which works great, it just won't switch into VR mode.

This is what I see when I start into a race, its only on a desktop mode not in true VR:

Try openVR.

Also, you should lower your PP settings to medium or less and disable DOF/Sunrays/Heat shimmer.
Smoke to low, see if you can get away with higher shadow res/Anisotropic filtering, and then see what happens when you turn up AA if you think you need it.
Enable high quality mirrors and ditch FXAA unless you like the look. (actually, I'm not sure FXAA even works in VR anyway)

@Uncle Petey open vr worked! thank you! im sure i tried it but maybe not in conjunction with the framerate limiter.

Anyway its working now thanks. Lasted all of 20 seconds the first time i moved ha ha felt so strange!

The framerate is great but i most notice the lack of sharpness in the distance is there anything i can do about that?
 
More AA and/or see what you can get away with with steamVR's supersampling options. Whichever gives you the best compromise of performance/quality :)

I've also tried increasing the pixels per display setting in content manager to 1.4 and I think it made a difference. Still can't read the text on the track signs very well though until I get quite close to them. Would like to try and sharpen up the distance a bit more if possible?
 
Click custom render resolution and play with the slider.
I don't think the PPD slider in CM will do anything, as you're running through steamVR, not Oculus.

Also try the settings I posted earlier, in case you missed the late edit :)
 
Thanks I made all the previous edits you suggested.

Performance is fine now, detail is good its just the sharpness issue. Perhaps thats the limit of the display.
 
Yes, you can only do so much with current VR.
The good news is that you have a good display there, so should be able to get away with less performance hungry stuff like AA/supersampling than I would with my CV1.
I have to run AAx4 and SS at 1.6, which looks good to me, but obviously a lot less than perfect.

Basically, you just have to fiddle until you've found the compromise that works for you.

If you've not already, change the per application setting to 1.5 minimum for assetto corsa. The limiting factor is your graphics card unfortunately, but the game can look quite smart with some nice post processing filters. Grab the Sol mod from the challenge first page, it sharpens things up with some nice colour tones.
 
He seems to have Sol, going by his PP filter choice :) I'd recommend the Sol_VR or Sol_extra filters. I prefer extra.
But yeah, the GPU is going to be the thing that decides on the level of compromise here.
 
Ive spent some time playing about with the various settings both in content manager and in the steam VR resolutions. Steam VR slider didn't seem to make any difference to quality but did make it jerky. The anti aliasing options in content manager do definitely improve things and do affect framerate but not too much, but they still don't sharpen up the long distance image. Maybe Im asking too much of the display, its just perhaps knowing what I can and can't achieve on the sharpness really.

Here is a screenshot from my 1080P monitor showing the Silverstone bridge sign and then below the same view from within VR. These are both taken at the exact same spot, the DRS markers just before the bridge.

The monitor view is pin sharp but the FOV is also making the sign appear much larger at the same point on the track. Whereas the VR is blurred but also appears further away in the screenshot (obviously in VR it feels like perfect perspective).

I guess the best way to describe this in game is it kinda feels like my vision is not quite 20:20. Obviously in real life, at that distance, I'd be able to see that sign perfectly I would have thought. Without my contacts in, I would just see a blue blur. This is kinda that feeling, like the prescription is too weak!


i don't need to change any FOV settings within VR do I, it just is correct automatically?

FOV should be fine by default in VR. Don't think you can change it anyway.

That VR view looks pretty good tbh. Is it a screenshot or a pic through the lens?
It's not like you really need to be seeing distant objects in pin sharp clarity anyway (I mean, what are you actually focusing on when you're driving?), plus I don't think it's something you're going to get with VR right now.
The simple fact is that it's not going to match the sharpness on your monitor :) It's just the price you pay for all dat dere lovely immersion.

Use this as a baseline (ignore the oculus PPD slider) and play with steamVR resolution scaling if you think you need to. Apart from that,there isn't a massive improvement from pushing any of these much further (in VR), unless you're taking screenshots or are the type that must have everything maxed out because PC master race etc ;)

Screenshot taken via the Oculus tool. Its strange putting the screenshots side by side like that really, because the monitor screenshot is obviously what I see, but the VR screenshot doesn't really look like that when you're actually in VR, so the screenshot makes it look worse than it is.

It seems that that's about the maximum sharpness possible then really. That's fine as long as I know. As you say the immersion more than makes up for it.

Its running really well on my RX480. I'll upgrade the GPU probably later in the year when the next generation comes out but so far things are perfectly playable, although Ive only played Assetto Corsa via steamVR as yet. The virtual desktop works great too but Ive also ordered a good USB3 cable so will see if its different when connected via that.
 
If it looks better than the screenie, then you're laughing. You've had a right result considering the silly priced GPU's we all buy to run this stuff properly :)

I look forward to seeing you in the TT challenge :D
 
Currently when i play assetto corsa the monitor shows whats happening in the headset. Is there a way to make the monitor not do this, and will that improve performance if the gpu doesnt have to drive the monitor?
