Help with CPU and Core Speed

Just installed these:

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3
2500K

Now, in the BIOS i have upped the multiplier to 42. However in CPU-Z it shows the core speed as 1604.7 MHz (x 16) and only now and then "shoots" up to the settings above! It then goes right back down.

Anyone care to shed any light please?

Also how do i change the Voltage in the BIOS? I have tried to run Prime95 on 4600 MHz and it failed witha BSOD!

Cheers :)

Try running Superpi or something to push the CPU and see what CPU-Z does then. The speed ramping is because you have Turbo boost on so it will throttle back to save power and heat.

Will do mate. BRB with results.

BTW, should my Core Voltage in CPU-Z be at 0.780 etc?

You want the latest version "beta" of CPu-Z other wise it reads the wrong voltage.

This might help,

The top number set at 40 with Turbo disabled gives you 4ghz all the time.

The top number left at 33 (stock value) with the turbo figures set to 40 each, gives you 4GHz as you need it.

Cool - thanks as always Stu.

On this board though where do i increase the CPU voltage to 1.325 levels?

Advanced Voltage settings, CPU Vcore.

So, Stu....

The Turbo Boost

Find out what your max overclock is etc, then set this on the Turbo Boost values. The CPU clock Ratio at 33 and then the overclock will "boost" in when you need it, to a MAX of what you put in teh Turbo Boost boxes?

Yep.

Remember start small 4-4.2GHz, test for stability by running Prime95 for like hours. (then you can save it as a user profile in the BIOS by pressing F11 and giving it a name) then move onto say 4.4Ghz and work to get that stable.

I've ended up with three OC profiles to pick from in my BIOS as I dont need 5GHz all the time.

Also get Realtemp and keep an eye on your core temps.

Your getting close to where I would stop, just a few more degrees or so, certainly i wouldnt want to be seeing a 80 reported, luckily no normal programs/usage will push the CPU like Prime does.

Too late....

Nothing like hindsight and experience.

I pushed it up to 4.7MHz and same Voltage. Now it wont boot into the BIOS, it tries then gives up and restarts, tries and restarts....

Ooops

When it starts up, switch the PSU off at the wall. leave it for 30 seconds-1minute, turn back on.

Just doing that matey, what happened btw? and how does this solve it?

EDIT: Not worked mate? :(
